Players are reporting that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is crashing their Xbox Series X consoles. The latest entry in the first person shooter franchise released today for current and next-gen consoles, as well as PC. The new game has been a hotly anticipated title for some time now, to the point that its open beta period was the most downloaded in franchise history.

As exciting as the new game is, players are already reporting bugs. This is to be expected for an early release on a brand new console generation, of course, but it’s still quite disruptive. PS5 players, for instance, are encountering an issue where their controllers will randomly be disconnected mid-game. This seems to be a glitch that’s carried over from the beta version on the PS4, and it has impacted the singleplayer campaign, the ubiquitous Zombies mode, and even online multiplayer, where it’s as good as a death sentence.

Series X players aren’t getting off easy either, though. Windows Central (via Game Rant) has reported that players are seeing the game crash completely on Xbox Series X. Not only is the game crashing, but it’s completely shutting down the entire console, forcing a full reboot before players can get back to the game. People have already started theorizing about the cause, and a likely culprit has been identified in the form of next-gen upgrades. Black Ops Cold War has a current-gen version and a next-gen version, and unlike a lot of other cross-gen games on the market, it isn’t free to upgrade to the next generation. The crashes might be caused by fans having the $60 current-gen version installed on their console instead of the $70 next-gen version. Even fans who bought the next-gen version might have had the old version installed by mistake if they were using an external HDD.

The prospect of reinstalling the game on the Series X’s internal SSD might be a daunting one to some players. After all, the game’s file size is tremendous. Unfortunately, reinstalling specifically the next-gen version seems to be the only reliable way to get the game to work, in lieu of any official patches from Treyarch or Activision, which are not forthcoming at the time of this writing.

As Remedy Entertainment has discovered with Control, no one likes paying extra for a next-gen upgrade. Usually these frustrations are simply the result of money-grubbing from the publishers, and as disappointing as they are, they’re not a big deal. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has proven just how difficult things can get when split up the console generations like this. Hopefully Treyarch will improve the situation for struggling gamers soon.
