For the third month in a row since its November 2020 launch, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the United States’ best-selling game in January 2021. Such success only bolsters Call of Duty’s reign as a whole. Last year, mere weeks after the new entry’s arrival, publisher Activision Blizzard announced that its flagship franchise had raked in $3 billion in just a 12-month timeframe.

Profitability on this scale was owed not only to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s meteoric success, but also the launches of Call of Duty: Mobile and Warzone. Merchandise and licensing were essential pieces of the pie as well, the publisher divulged in a press release. But strong profits do not necessarily equate to happy customers. Black Ops Cold War and Warzone in particular have been the cause of much contention for the last handful of months. Most notably, not everyone is pleased with the integration of the two titles. Plus, a number of premium skin-related glitches in Warzone continues to raise concerns about potential pay-to-win elements.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella released data that notes Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ranked as the best-selling title in the United States in January, meaning it managed to top the charts for a third consecutive month. A subsequent post in Piscatella’s Twitter thread reveals yet another fascinating bit of sales data – Black Ops Cold War now counts as the 20th best-selling game in U.S. history. It’s an incredible feat, considering the shooter has only been on the market for a handful of months.

US NPD SW – Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was January’s best-selling game. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has been the best-selling game in the U.S. each month since its November launch, and it now ranks as the 20th best-selling video game in U.S. tracked history.

Undoubtedly, 2021 is shaping up to be yet another landmark year for publisher Activision Blizzard. And the content roll out for Black Ops Cold War is just getting started. A free Zombies update went live earlier this month, adding in the eagerly-anticipated Firebase Z map. Dead Ops Arcade Solo Advanced Start, a brand-new game mode, featured in the Zombies update, too. This jammed packed content release additionally brought back Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s Tombstone Soda Perk, which is available across Firebase Z and Die Maschine.

Though Black Ops Cold War hasn’t quite hit its stride, rumors already abound about what the next Call of Duty installment may entail. A reputable leaker recently reported that Sledgehammer Games will lead production on this year’s adventure in the franchise. With both Advanced Warfare and WWII under its belt, there’s no telling what a new Sledgehammer-developed COD title could bring to the table.
