The Umbrella Academy Characters, Ranked By Intelligence

The Umbrella Academy has a colorful array of characters, some more intelligent than others. Who comes out on top?

There are uniquely different characters in The Umbrella Academy who all come from different backgrounds and reacted differently to their upbringing at the academy. The siblings all have different superpowers and reckon with their powers differently, while there are many characters operating outside of the academy as well.

There is a wide range of intelligence throughout the show given their experiences that either build or degrade their intelligence and the amount of emotional intelligence and understanding of others that each character has.

10 Luther

Most of Luther’s thought process is blinded by needing his father Reginald’s approval and it seems to be difficult for him to function without his father as in most of the second season episodes he seemed to be lost. Although he claims to want to save the world, he usually reacts selfishly, not wanting to help unless he’s in charge, and seems petty and standoffish when Five tries to explain his reasoning behind his plans to stop the apocalypse.

9 Diego

Diego tends to have a one-track mind that includes fighting for what he thinks is right and good and doesn’t want to listen to any outside opinions or plans other than his own. The first season sees him track down Hazel and Cha Cha even after Hazel turns to the good side and the second season sees him obsessed with saving JFK from being assassinated, even though he is told multiple times that it could ruin the timeline. Diego is better with his powers, quick action, and knives than methodical strategic planning and book smarts.

8 Pogo

Pogo is listed a little higher on the intelligence scale mostly because he knows all of Reginald’s origins and secrets from his past because he is a trusted ally. He knows how The Umbrella Academy works and was a trusted friend to the children growing up and seemed to understand them all very well. That being said, he also makes terrible decisions about keeping Vanya’s powers a secret and choosing one of the worst possible moments to talk to her about it.

7 Vanya

Vanya is a talented violinist who seems to be knowledgable in other subjects as well, but she also frequently allows her emotions to take control of her and it has devastating results. It’s understandable that Vanya can’t control her powers because Reginald never allowed her to work on that growing up because he was afraid of her. But it’s also true that Vanya was blinded to reality in her relationship with Leonard Peabody.

6 Allison

Allison seems to be a smart, capable, and independent woman throughout the series, but she also tends to make the same mistakes over and over again. Most of her problems in life are due to the repercussions of using her powers. She is hesitant to use them because every time she does it causes problems in her marriage, as a mother, and with her siblings.

5 Klaus

Klaus is intelligent and tends to understand people, but chooses to be numb most of the time due to not wanting to constantly commune with the dead. Klaus is a survivor that knows how to live in almost any situation and be comfortable with his environment.

The fact that Klaus accidentally becomes a cult leader in the second season and has an enormous people fooled that he is a prophet also takes some intelligence.

4 Ben

Although not much is shown regarding Ben’s technical knowledge, it’s shown time and again that he has a deep knowledge of his siblings, after seventeen years of watching them with Klaus, and keen emotional intelligence. Ben also helped Klaus by figuring out how to hone his powers and allow Ben to cross over and help the family, and also attempt to possess him in season two.

3 Reginald

Reginald is a master manipulator and a successful businessman that also excels in scientific endeavors like building Grace, raising Pogo as a baby, and saving Luther’s life. Reginald explains his wisdom in a logical, curt, and cold way that is beneficial in the fields of science and business but aren’t very heartwarming for his adopted children to grow up with. He has the book smarts and psychological smarts to understand technical knowledge and people, but he lacks emotional intelligence.

2 The Handler

The Handler is constantly devising a plan to keep her top spot at the mysterious Commission and usually, she’s successful with her plans. Five has thwarted her plans a few times, but in every other case, she has kept the upper hand and ensured her own safety while never being afraid to hurt people along the way.

She’s also manipulated Lila for her entire life, presumably among other countless children, and almost got away with it.

1 Five

Five is undeniably the smartest of the bunch as he’s always one step ahead of every other character in the series. He’s been to the future, the past, and everything in between and he’s always brilliant no matter the decade he’s in. Number Five is the one who knows the details about doomsday and comes up with the best plans in how to avoid the apocalypse, not to mention all of his scientific and assassin knowledge.
