This Friday is an unofficial and unorthodox holiday known as No Pants Day, which will unite more than 25 comic strip artists under a single banner for charity by drawing their respective comic strip characters without pants. The reason is an effort to raise awareness about clothing donations and to refill thrift stores, some of which have been hurt since the pandemic.

No Pants Day initially started as a prank at the University of Texas in the 1980s. Summertime in the Texas state capitol can get a little clammy, so a few students who belonged to a niche on-campus club called the Knighthood of Buh de-panted to celebrate the completion of finals. For two decades, highlighting some skivvies during the first Friday in May was a Texas-centric celebration. Then in 2000, the campus-wide indecent exposure spoof went global. And on Friday, not drawing pants means donating some in your local community.

Stalwarts of the Sunday Funnies like Peanuts or Garfield have gained pop-culture icon status, crossing over into films and beloved television specials. While not many are in circulation these days, the Associated Press reports that notable comic strips such as Dennis the Menace, Blondie, Hi and Lois, Sally Forth, and Zippy the Pinhead will be featured this Friday with the main characters sans pants as a fun way to help charities recoup clothing donations for any organization hit hard by the pandemic. “This was a great way to help bring communities together but also have a little bit of a laugh,” said Tea Fougner, comics editor at King Features Syndicate, which distributes many popular comic strips. “Just the idea of No Pants Day, I think, is something that everybody can feel a little bit closer to this year than in previous years.”

To make No Pants Day a unified front among popular comic strips, King Features reached out to fellow syndicators Tribune Content Agency, Andrews McMeel Universal, and Washington Post Writers Group in February about the outreach. The completed comic strips of characters without pants were submitted toward the end of March.

Then, speaking about uniting with the competition, Fougner said, “We may be business competitors, but we’re all part of the same family. We all love comics and we love our communities. And, at the end of the day, that’s really what cartooning is about. So we want as many cartoonists as possible to take part in initiatives like this.” Look for your local newspaper this weekend to see how your favorite comic strips pay it forward on No Pants Day.
