Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

There are few television shows that are as fearless and brilliant as Community, and the continued love that it receives years after its end is a testament to its evergreen status as a sitcom classic. Community is an unabashed love letter to the medium of television that frequently engages in stylistic concept episodes that are a reflection of the characters’ mental states, but at its core, it’s a show about human connection at a community college.

Greendale Community College is far from a “normal” school, which makes it the perfect sitcom setting. The antics that occur at Greendale are always funny, but they don’t always reflect an ideal college setting.

10 They Never Have Any Money

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

Funding for public education is often a frustrating battle where there never seems to be adequate resources, but bankruptcy just seems to be par for the course at Greendale Community College. The Dean is never very eloquent with his attempts to hide the school’s paltry budget and his efforts for cash influxes are often illogical or buried behind layers of corporate sponsorship. It seems as if each year Greendale is left with fewer resources and a Dean that is progressively less equipped to solve the problem.

9 Entire Records And Grades Can Be Lost

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

The Dean absolutely has good intentions with the work that he does at Greendale Community College, but he’s often so overwhelmed by the workload that he makes major errors that would be inexcusable at any other post-secondary school. Students may not be happy about the workload, but they still get it done and strive for good marks. This makes it especially frustrating that the Dean’s bookkeeping methods are flawed and he has a tendency to lose vital information, like the grades of the collective student body. Students shouldn’t have to live in fear that all of their hard work may suddenly be lost because of an inept Dean.

8 There’s A Disturbing School Mascot

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

Greendale is lacking in many areas, but school pride is certainly not one of them. It’s just a shame that the school’s mascot feels more like a creature from a Clive Barker horror film than a friendly support figure.

Greendale’s Human Being begins as a gag about inclusive characters that don’t leave anyone feeling offended, but the end result is a frightening creature whose lack of differences makes him more abrasive. The Human Being is totally harmless, but he’s likely to surprise some students, especially with some of his holiday-themed costume variations.

7 Periodic Attacks From City College

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

Greendale Community College isn’t the only school in Greendale, Colorado, and the institution frequently comes under fire from the more accomplished City College. It seems as if City College has Greendale outranked in nearly every area, which makes their attacks feel both unnecessary and vindictive upon the overwhelmed Dean. City College doesn’t just instigate some major attacks on the school, but they’re more than comfortable poaching the top students and removing Greendale’s best and brightest. Greendale has enough of its own problems without also having to worry about City College.

6 The Greendale Seven Are Given Priority

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

It stands to reason that the main characters in a TV show would be given some special treatment, but Community did a decent job at highlighting how the preferential treatment that the “Greendale Seven” receives is incredibly annoying to the rest of the student body. The Greendale Seven seem to always have tabs on the study room, but the Dean’s announcements specifically focus on them and give them even more perks. Granted, these characters have done a lot for the Dean, but the rest of the school shouldn’t have to suffer as a result.

5 Gas Leaks That Last An Entire Year

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

A very polarizing time during Community’s run takes place during Season 4 when the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, was fired, only to later be reinstated the following season. There’s a distinctly different feel to the fourth season as a result, but Harmon doesn’t just wave it away or make it non-canon.

Instead, it’s implied that the odd behavior of the year was the result of an intense gas leak. It’s a decent enough explanation for the show’s inconsistencies, but within the reality of Greendale, it’s actually a major safety liability.

4 Enrolling In Classes Is Done Through Chaotic Means

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

There are a wide array of atypical classes that are offered at Greendale, but sometimes the admissions process is even more bewildering. The Season 4 premiere of Community sees Greendale devolve into archaic combat and feats of strength in order to gain admission to “History of Ice Cream.” The Dean turns to Hunger Games-esque anarchy and characters are forced to endure impossible tasks to get into this history course. Students shouldn’t have to worry that they might get injured in combat or humiliated in front of the entire school whenever they want to enroll in a popular class.

3 Their Advertising Materials Haven’t Been Updated Since The 1990s

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

Community brings to everyone’s attention that the current commercial that advertises the school hasn’t been updated since the 1990s, and it’s hardly a proud endorsement of what Greendale has to offer. It’s one thing to visit Greendale and personally experience it, but anyone from out of town only has this old ad as a reference point. Admittedly, the Dean does develop a slightly updated advertisement for Greendale, but there are still many elements from the older ‘90s video that remain. It hardly gives off the impression of “modern.”

2 The Dean Is More Concerned About Being Loved Than Running A School

Community 10 Harsh Realities Of Going To Greendale

It’s not easy to run a school, but there are certain sacrifices that need to be made. Deans are often portrayed as curt and cold individuals because they need to value a school’s budget and reputation. Technically everything that Greendale’s Dean does is for the school, but he’s become a pathetic and lonely individual who equates the school’s success with his own validation. The Dean’s desire to be loved, have friends, and be seen as good at his job becomes so suffocating that students often need to be his support system. He’s too fragile for this line of work.

1 The School Often Descends Into Paintball Mayhem

One of the most entertaining traditions in Community for the audience is the heightened paintball matches that always seem to find a way of taking over the campus. These heightened battles are deeply engaging, but they represent Greendale at its most chaotic. The school is completely destroyed whenever paintball becomes the solution to problems and most of the participants are unnecessarily put through the gauntlet. Greendale argues that a student’s defense and espionage skills are just as important as their intelligence. It’s hardly a stable environment that supports learning.
