Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a wildly creative series that’s persevered and evolved in remarkable ways since its debut all the way back in 1987. It’s incredible how Araki and JoJo’s style have evolved and become more confident as they’ve embraced different staples of storytelling and not been afraid to change ideas or even completely reset the slate radically.

The sixth major JoJo saga is Stone Ocean, and it’s an important change of pace since it marks the series’ first female protagonist with Jolyne Cujoh. Jolyne certainly has a lot in common with the other Joestars that have become before her, but she’s an exciting addition to the canon that’s led quite the full life.

10 She’s Jotaro Kujo’s 19-Year-Old Daughter

One factor that’s helped keep JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure so fresh after all of these years is how the series shifts through different protagonists as it tells a gigantic story that spans multiple generations.

Jolyne Cujoh is an important lead to the series that’s the teenage daughter of Jotaro Kujo, the lead from Stardust Crusaders. JoJo has previously explored teenage delinquent protagonists, but Jolyne feels like a breath of fresh air. She embodies Jotaro’s more stubborn traits but has grown into a uniquely rebellious individual that’s in the middle of figuring herself out.

9 Her Stand Is Stone Free

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has featured dozens of strange Stands throughout its different series. Usually, there’s an extra level of attention that goes into the Stands of central characters, especially members of the Joestar family.

Jolyne’s Stand is Stone Free, which can unravel parts of its body into a string, which becomes incredibly useful for evasion or escape purposes. However, this unraveling string quality also allows for communication abilities where Jolyne can listen in on others. It’s a Stand with many impressive functions, and Jolyne is a beginner in the area, but she quickly gets the hang of Stone Free.

8 She Was Initially Requested To Be A Male Character

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure predominantly features male protagonists and villains, but there are still powerful girls in the past, like Lisa Lisa or Golden Wind’s Trish. Stone Ocean tries to subvert expectations by making its protagonist, Jolyne Cujoh, a girl.

Hirohiko Araki actually faced difficulties in this area, and Hideto Azuma claims that Araki’s editor requested that he make Jolyne a male since Weekly Shonen Jump’s audience is boys. Araki held firm and said the fears that boys wouldn’t accept a female protagonist is exactly the reason why Jolyne had to exist to help break this trend.

7 She’s Been Arrested On Multiple Occasions

Jolyne Cujoh is a good person, but she ends up on the wrong side of the law on multiple occasions. Jolyne initially commits crimes as a way to act out and get her absent father’s attention, but her toxic relationship with Romeo also leads to an extensive jail sentence.

Stone Ocean begins with Jolyne’s incarceration in Florida’s Green Dolphin St. Prison for 15 years for vehicular manslaughter, but her gang affiliation also previously got her in trouble. It’s bittersweet that Jolyne’s prison time is largely an extension of her relationship with Jotaro, who also begins his story in a prison cell.

6 Her Stand Gets Activated By A Disguised Stand Arrow

Stands are one of the more fascinating aspects of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and there’s still a lot of mysteries surrounding them even though the series has given many answers on the subject. Some characters are naturally endowed with Stand abilities, while others need it activated by a Stand Arrow.

Jolyne’s Stone Free Stand gets triggered when she pricks her finger on an amulet, which happens to contain a Stand Arrowhead. This transformation is somewhat atypical for a Joestar, considering that they usually have innate Stand abilities that don’t require an outside trigger.

5 She’s The Star Of Her Own Prequel One-Shot

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has created such a rich universe that there are tons of side stories and supporting characters to explore, which occasionally happens through one-shot spin-offs or non-canon stories. These one-shots are typically reserved for more tangential individuals like Rohan Kishibe or Yoshikage Kira, but Jolyne is the one protagonist to receive this treatment.

Jolyne, Fly High With GUCCI is a sentimental prequel story that looks at Jolyne in the airport while she reminisces over her mother. Fly High With GUCCI also curiously features alternate versions of Golden Wind’s Bucciarati and Abbacchio, suspicious of Jolyne.

4 Her Butterfly Knife Tattoo Is Proof Of Gang Admission

The characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are covered in flair, and it often feels like they tack on as much as possible to have the most outrageous image possible. Jolyne’s clothing and hair exhibit tons of creativity, but she’s also a character with a distinct tattoo near her left elbow.

The tattoo is a combination of a butterfly and a knife, which seems emblematic of Jolyne’s warring sensibilities. However, the tattoo is actually Jolyne’s proof of membership into her old car-stealing gang from her darker days. She’s been able to reappropriate the ink into something more empowering.

3 It’s Uncertain If Her Mother Is Still Alive

Parents and guardianship are actually an essential component of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, both in terms of the idea of a legacy and how much descendants can rise above their ancestors. Jolyne Cujoh’s father is Jotaro, but her mother’s identity has largely left a mystery other than how she was a warmer presence to Jolyne than Jotaro.

She’s alive, yet out of the picture, in Stone Ocean, but it’s interesting that in the one-shot, Jolyne, Fly High With GUCCI, Jolyne’s mother recently passed away, and the grief is still fresh with Jolyne.

2 Her Hair Style Is Inspired By Britney Spears

Every character in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has a particular and iconic style, whether reflected in their clothing, body language, or hair. Jolyne Cujoh is no exception, and she has an incredibly striking look that’s a bit of a departure for JoJo.

Jolyne’s “mouse-like” hair gets a lot of attention, and the inspiration behind this one aspect of Jolyne’s character is Britney Spears’ look and hairstyle in the “…Baby One More Time” music video. It certainly works for her character and is also another fun way for Araki to respect the music video in some way.

1 Her Alternate Universe Counterpart Lives A Free Life

All of the different sagas in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure end in very extravagant ways, but it’s hard to top the big finish that concludes Stone Ocean. The dangerous Stand, Made in Heaven, speeds up time and causes reality to reset and start over.

This new world offers a glimpse of its Jolyne counterpart and what her existence looks like. Irene is not a prisoner and seems to actively be happy and in a healthy relationship with Anakiss, this reality’s new version of Anasui. This at least shows that Jolyne is not always destined to a tragic fate.
