Major Spoilers for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run Ahead

Hirohiko Araki’s long-running series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is well known for insane plot twists and strangely specific abilities, but one of their weirdest events makes Jesus himself an important part of the series.

When the series reached its seventh part, Steel Ball Run, it turned back to the beginning with a very different take on its original protagonist, Jonathan Joestar. Steel Ball Run follows Johnny, a version of Jonathan born in America, who participates in a race across the country called the Steel Ball Run. Johnny meets alternate versions of Zeppeli and Dio (Diego), and in this universe Stands are already appearing, giving characters from this era Stand abilities for the first time. Instead of Hamon (or Ripple, as it’s sometimes translated), Zeppeli teaches Johnny about a power known as Spin, which goes on to show up again in part eight. As they make their way from San Diego to New York, they discover that there’s a secret motive behind this race which no one could have guessed.

U.S. President Funny Valentine intended to use the race to help him locate some mysterious artifacts known as the Saint’s Corpse, which is split into 9 different pieces and scattered across the country. The pieces create areas known as Devil’s Palms around them, which can be highly dangerous and often provoke the development of a Stand in those who survive contact. The Saint’s Corpse parts can also fuse into the body of people who discover them, granting additional powers. Where this really gets weird is who the Corpse once belonged to.

There’s a heavy implication that the Saint’s Corpse is in fact that of Jesus Christ. The hands have the stigmata injuries, for example, from his time on the cross. In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure following his death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, Jesus heads to the east, traveling across Asia and eventually crossing the Pacific to reach North America. He lives there amongst the Native Americans until dying of old age. His body parts, which seem immune to decay, are slowly spread across the continent. Characters who come into contact with parts of the corpse are sometimes granted visions of Jesus, who may provide them with advice or guidance. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem to matter whether the person has good intentions; Jesus’s powers will be available to them regardless. And yes, Jesus did, in fact, have a Stand in the Steel Ball Run/Jojolion universe.

With all these facts in mind, fans began to theorize. Stands are manifestations of the user’s soul, and they’re also known to sometimes continue to exist beyond their user’s death. There’s also no indication of anyone earlier in history possessing a Stand in this universe, and instruments like the Stand Arrow which grant stands aren’t shown to exist, either. It’s almost more of a divine power, and those who develop Stands after contact with a Devil’s Palm are essentially being “Chosen,” possibly by the spirit of Jesus himself. Since Jesus’ name could be anglicized to Joshua, Son of Joseph… he’s technically a Jojo, and likely the first Jojo. With Jesus living out a full life in North America, it’s also possible that, in the Steel Ball Run universe, Jesus had descendants, leading down over the generations until finally reaching Johnny Joestar in 1890.

Although only a fan theory, the idea that Jesus was the origin of the Joestar family brings about a very different dynamic to the series. Jesus’ corpse is explicitly stated to exist in only one universe in the Jojo multiverse, so this wouldn’t hold true to the previous Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure canon seen in parts 1-6. With a part 9 on the way, this idea may still yet be confirmed or dismissed.
