Community was filled with interesting and offbeat characters, most of whom were not redeemable in any fashion. They were all terrible when they arrived at Greendale Community College, and somehow Greendale only succeeded in making them worse. But at least they had each other. The only people worse than the students were their teachers, in particular Professor Ian Duncan and Señor Ben Chang.

Neither of them was particularly good at their respective jobs, though one was a far more frightening human being than the other. Still, both men were the absolute worst in their own special ways.

10 PROFESSOR IAN DUNCAN: Tried To Extort Jeff Winger

In the pilot episode of the series, Jeff Winger ended up at Greendale Community College after his law firm discovered his credentials were faked. He chose Greendale because his old friend Ian Duncan worked there. Jeff tried to get Duncan to help him cheat his way to a degree, which Duncan only did in exchange for his car. It turned out Duncan gave him nothing, which he framed as teaching Jeff a lesson instead of just screwing him over.

9 SEÑOR BEN CHANG: Grade A Jerk

Chang was one of the most feared professors in the school, due in no small part to the fact that he was a petty and vindictive bastard. He would torment his students endlessly, giving them pointless assignments that made no sense to anyone.

The study group was frequently at his mercy as they needed the language credit to advance in their respective programs. As it turned out, there was an incredibly good reason for Chang acting that way.

8 PROFESSOR IAN DUNCAN: Drunken Rap

In the Season One finale, the study group attended one of the dozens of dances that happen at Greendale throughout the school year. Many of those dances had only the vaguest of reasons for even happening. Two major events occurred at this particular dance. First, Jeff was forced to choose between Britta Perry and Professor Slater. Second, Duncan was suspended for performing a drunken, offensive rap. It was horrifyingly bad.

7 SEÑOR BEN CHANG: Didn’t Know Spanish

As it turned out, the reason Señor Chang, Greendale’s Spanish teacher, was so terrible to his students was to distract from the fact that he did not know any Spanish. A toddler watching Sesame Street in a Saskatoon suburb would have had a better grasp of Spanish than Chang did.

The scary part was he taught hundreds, if not thousands, of students over the years, misinforming them and somehow picking up none of the language by accident.

6 PROFESSOR IAN DUNCAN: Career Before Students

Much like his students, Duncan seemed like he was perpetually looking for a way out of Greendale. It’s hard to blame him as Greendale was a terrible school but Duncan was also a terrible professor. He fit in perfectly. When Abed Nadir had a full and complete breakdown at Christmas, Duncan used it as an opportunity to try and build a case study that would help elevate his career. He seemed much less concerned about helping the young man.

5 SEÑOR BEN CHANG: Elegant Ladies Pantsuits

One of the most vengeful things Chang ever did happened during Season One. When Pierce Hawthorne and Troy Barnes didn’t receive any Valentine’s Day cards, they faked them and Chang called them out.

Shirley Bennett and Annie Edison tried to get revenge on their friends’ behalf but Chang assumed it was the boys and made them go to the Valentine’s dance wearing elegant ladies pantsuits. It was a jerk move but they pulled the look off.

4 PROFESSOR IAN DUNCAN: “Tried” To “Teach” Anthropology

When the anthropology professor was put on leave for trying to kill Jeff and, to a lesser extent, drinking her own urine in class, Duncan stepped in. The only problem was he knew as much about anthropology as Chang did about Spanish. The class was a total loss for everyone in it as Duncan spent most of his time showing funny internet videos and drinking as he had reverted to being an alcoholic quite quickly after the rap incident.

3 SEÑOR BEN CHANG: Imprisoned Dean Pelton

After a series of unfortunate events that were largely caused by his own stupidity, Chang ended up working as a security guard at Greendale in exchange for free room and board.

Somehow, he parlayed that position into secretly taking the school over and running it with an iron fist. Chang accomplished this in part by trapping Dean Pelton in the basement for several months and installing a lookalike dean as his puppet ruler.

2 PROFESSOR IAN DUNCAN: Constantly Stirred The Pot

In pretty much every episode he was in, Duncan did nothing but stir up trouble. He was a selfish man who put himself above everything and everyone else, yet somehow still managed to constantly fail. As much as he felt himself better than Greendale Community College, the truth was it was better than him. No, that’s not true, either. They were both equally terrible and absolutely deserved each other.

1 SEÑOR BEN CHANG: Tried To Blow The School Up

The endgame of Chang’s time as the secret ruler of the school was to blow it up with everyone in it. At his birthday party, he planned on playing an absurdly long keytar solo that would end with a massive explosion. Chang’s intention was to cover up the many, many crimes he had committed over those months by committing mass murder. It wasn’t the best plan but that’s about as good a strategy as you’re going to get from Chang.
