With Love arrives on Amazon Prime Video on December 17, bringing with it five episodes full of holiday fun and laughter. The comedy follows the Diaz family and their respective romances over the course of various yearly celebrations. Such an innovative concept was conceived by Gloria Calderón Kellett, previously responsible for the much-beloved One Day At A Time reboot. A love letter to Latino families, the show starts on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) as the Diaz siblings prepare to surprise their parents with romantic revelations.

While Lily (Emeraude Toubia, Shadowhunters) has just broken up with the perfect boyfriend her family loved, Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato, Dead of Summer) is ready to introduce his new boyfriend Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) to the family but not sure of how they will behave. For both siblings, however, the romance in their lives feels like it can’t compare to the seemingly perfect relationship their parents (played by Constance Marie of Undone and Benito Martinez of 13 Reasons Why) have.

Marie and Martinez spoke to Screen Rant about what lies behind the surface of their characters’ marriage and which are their personal favorite holidays.

Screen Rant: It’s so nice to see this foundational couple of Beatriz and Jorge that echoes out into all the other relationships we see on the show. Can you both discuss how you set that example, whether it is good or too good?

Constance Marie: The person who set that example was Gloria Calderón Kellett, who wrote a very complex relationship with very subtle, strong struggles internally. On paper, it looks like we have the perfect marriage. We have grown children, we’re fully functional, everybody loves everybody; we’re connected.

But the private struggle that’s going on is, I think, one that a lot of women in America deal with because we’re pulled in so many different directions. We’re trying to hold it together for everybody. And then we sort of forget that we haven’t connected with ourselves in a very long time, and we don’t know we’re lonely. We’re lonely in a crowd, and we’re lonely in the family. I think that is just magic; it’s gold that she tapped into, in how we try to subtly write the ship.

It’s also focusing on the communication – if we could just communicate in our relationships, it might not go so far off track. But I think that the coupling that she wrote, and the dynamic that she wrote, is a wonderful exploration of what happens after the happily ever after. It’s really great.

Benito, Jorge is a loving father and a caring husband, but maybe doesn’t always see the full picture of what is going on around him. How do you view his approach to his marriage and also even to his parenting, especially with Jorge Jr.?

Benito Martinez: They do have their own journey. But I was just saying that what’s fun about the pilot is it starts with me walking arm in arm with my daughter, and I say, “Go get some wine,” and the episode ends with me clearing up some air with my son. And everything in between – his hopes and dreams about a taco truck, and having my private time, or when my back hurts and I have to sit someplace else – all of those different elements show the relationship [with] all these other people that Jorge’s navigating.

He’s not a mean guy. He’s not an overly macho person, but he does have his own journey. He’s comfortable in his skin, but at the same time, he’s not so set in his ways that he can’t learn. That’s what I love about the character; that’s what I love about all the characters. I think Gloria does a great job of setting the tone with the grandparents: they’re comfortable in their skin, whatever age they’re at, and they’re willing to love and carry their traditions and ask questions and dance. And if they’re doing that, they’re encouraging their kids to do that.

My mom was like that. My mom always said, “Why not? Just go and be a rebel. Why not? If you make a mistake, get up and do it again.” That’s part of this show. There’s an element of, “You’re safe to make mistakes.” And I think Jorge is that guy who walks through until he realizes he’s made a mistake. Then that triggers something else, and when you have a relationship like – a strong relationship – when you make mistakes, you go and ask your partner for help. “Can you help me?” I think Gloria does a great job putting that in the show.

I also love how With Love charts the course of this relationship and family through holidays, which are ever so important to Latino culture. What is your favorite holiday?

Benito Martinez: The next one!

Constance Marie: I am guilty of loving every holiday. I know, at some point, my daughter is going to be very embarrassed by me because of the amount of holiday stuff in my garage for every holiday. And I bust it all out, and I’m like, “This is for us. Will you help me?” Then she gets distracted by something else, and I do it all by myself, and I don’t care.

I’m one of those people that, when I was single in my early 30s, I would decorate my entire apartment for Christmas for nobody but me. I just feel like it’s a milestone: remember that Christmas, remember that Dia de los muertos, remember that New Year’s. And as we get older, holding on to memories is super important.

In this family Diaz, there’s these milestone and transformational conversations, connections, love, and celebrations that keep us together. And one of the things I really truly believe is, with what the world has gone through and what we’ve gone through as humans in the last few years, this is a show about remembering the celebrations. It’s an invitation to be vulnerable and kind and love again.
