Courtney Love Praises Succession Season 3’s Use of Nirvana Song

Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney Love praised the use of a Nirvana song in Succession season 3. The HBO series follows the duplicities and betrayals of the dysfunctional Roy family, who run a global media conglomerate, Waystar Royco, and who are each in their own way fighting for control of the company. Since premiering in June 2018, Succession has become one of the most popular shows on television thanks to the unique writing and perfectly prickly ensemble cast. With more than two years having passed since the explosive season 2 finale, Succession season 3’s premiere was highly anticipated, and TV’s richest family have finally returned to their brutal double-crosses.

The most shocking moment yet happened in Succession episode 3, “The Disruption.” After Logan names Shiv president of Waystar, Shiv holds a town hall meeting with employees to address any concerns that may be brewing as the war with Kendall heats up. Kendall sabotages the event by covertly placing speakers throughout the town hall and blaring at full volume Nirvana’s “Rape Me,” a blunt reference to the ongoing investigations into Waystar’s cover-up of sexual assaults on the company’s cruise lines.

Courtney Love, who was married to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain up until his death in 1994, took to Instagram to praise how Succession deployed the band’s classic single during the scene. She recalls being in the room when Cobain wrote the song in the early ’90s and says the show used it in a way that truly understands Cobain’s lyrical intentions. While her highly publicized marriage to Cobain is the biggest part of her legacy nowadays, Love had already forged her own career as the lead singer of the hugely successful alt-rock band Hole. Though she went on to star in several movies in the late ’90s like The People vs. Larry Flynt and alongside Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon, her solo music career remains her primary, with music magazine NME in 2020 calling her “one of the most influential singers in alternative culture of the last 30 years.”

Succession’s music continues to be one of the show’s most interesting tools, especially in regard to Kendall’s character. Nicholas Britell’s searing, operatic theme and score rightfully garner the most praise, but the show cleverly uses songs to illustrate Kendall’s head space in any given moment, whether it’s when he’s blasting one of Nirvana’s most graphic songs in a hall full of people or listening to Beastie Boys to pump himself up. Succession weaponizes music in an extremely underrated way, and it’ll be fascinating to see if the four siblings conjure up any more shocking musical moments this season.
