The reality show Crime Scene Kitchen is now underway and we are about to share plenty of fascinating facts about the show’s host, Joel McHale. On Crime Scene Kitchen, several teams are competing to show off their detective skills and stellar cooking, and host Joel is having a blast. He’s revealed that he has a sweet tooth; carrot cake is one of his favorite desserts. This is why he’s the perfect person to oversee the “battle stations,” as he calls them.

Joel McHale has decided to play host to these bakers, helping them to understand the rules while offering pep talks or making humorous remarks about their attempts. The show’s rules mean that show is a mix of a classic scavenger hunt, the board game Clue. and a Food Network Baking Championship challenge. Joel admits that he doesn’t know what the desserts are, though he’s always willing to support contestants or sneak tastes from them. Contestants need to have epic fails before he makes jokes about their creations. He did remark that a Key lime pie turned into “soup” and wouldn’t set properly.

Joel has had many roles in Hollywood. He’s been a writer, actor, producer, comedian, and show host. He was on Sesame Street, demonstrating the word “prickly,” and explaining why that shouldn’t be paired with a group hug involving cacti and pineapple Muppets. He worked with Bill Nye on Almost Live. Later, he appeared on Bill Nye The Science Guy on PBS, posing as a defendant that said hot liquids rise out of their containers after a plaintiff accused him of drinking her hot chocolate. He was also spotted in a quick Spider-Man 2 cameo, as a banker discussing Aunt May’s mortgage with her and Peter Parker. Joel has done stage work with Circle X Theatre and hosted The Soup on the E! Network from 2004 to 2015, also serving as the show’s executive producer and writer.

Joel is best-known for playing Jeff Winger in the Dan Harmon sitcom, Community. The show featured Jeff as a disgraced lawyer that needed to get a proper Bachelor’s degree in order to rebuild his career. His boss has found out that he’d faked his undergraduate diploma. Along the way, he ended up building a beautiful friendship with several fellow students and faculty members. He learned that he needed people more than money and status. Over six seasons, (a Community movie has a good chance of happening) he got to expand his range from the straight man character to someone who could either roll with the weirdness or reveal emotional vulnerabilities. The show acknowledges that he could have been like Chris Pratt, who starred in Parks & Recreation before becoming a film superhero.

For those that saw Joel playing the health-conscious Jeff, who worked out regularly and freaked out because he had to take cholesterol medication, it is a surprise that he loves sweets. He’s a fun addition to Crime Scene Kitchen, where the food (and evidence of it being eaten) is everywhere. Most baking hosts, with few exceptions, don’t dive into the desserts; they focus on the entertainment. However, Joel insists on trying some of the experiments and showstoppers. He won’t lie when a dish is a failure, but he won’t go Paul Hollywood on a baker that tried their hardest to get that base to solidify. This new show allows Joel to show off one more layer of his personality. One can hope that Crime Scene Kitchen gets more future seasons. It’s nice to see Joel branching out after Community.
