Cujo vs Church Which Evil Stephen King Animal Is a Better Villain

When it comes to evil animals, Stephen King created two of the best in Cujo and Pet Sematary’s Church, but which one is the better villain? Over his more than four decade career as an author, King has managed to turn just about everything into an evil version of that thing. Evil laundry machine? Check. Evil car? Check. Evil hotel room? Of course. But Cujo and Church are two of his most terrifying creations, if only because for most people, dogs and cats are creatures they love.

People love their pets, and some just love animals in general. The thought of hurting an animal would never even cross their mind, but if an evil furball crosses one’s path, it’s quite likely the only option will be to kill or be killed. Or at least maimed. When it comes to Cujo and Church, these pets are no longer man’s best friend, and would like nothing more than for every human around them to die as if they had withheld the wet food for two weeks straight.

Whether one finds Church or Cujo scarier will most likely come down to which kind of animal they love more. When it comes to the question of who’s the better villain in their respective film though, that’s a bit more nuanced. Here’s a breakdown of their strengths and weaknesses.

Cujo

While rendered evil by the effects of rabies on his brain, Cujo is not a superpowered villain. That said, he’s still a huge Saint Bernard, and can easily take down and overpower a human being if things get in close quarters. The threat of being mauled by Cujo is an ever-present one. At the same time, Cujo would definitely be slower than Church due to his added weight. He’s also fighting against his own instincts, which is made much clearer in the book. Cujo wants nothing more than to be a good dog, and is in many ways a very sympathetic villain. But the rabies virus can’t be reasoned with.

Church

On the other hand, Pet Sematary’s Church is much less of a brute force combatant, as is the cat way, but he’ll use his speed and agility to scratch and claw the hell out of anyone in his path. As a villain, Church also has the plus of being much more evil, and less sympathetic. Unlike Cujo, a sweet dog with an illness, “Church” after his resurrection is clearly not the same cat he was, and is guided by a powerful force of evil. Like Cujo, Chuch isn’t superpowered physically, but definitely seems to be malevolent and abnormally intelligent in some way. Cujo wants to kill people, while Church wants to make them suffer.

The Better Villain

So, Cujo has more power and Church has more speed, while Church is more evil and Cujo deep down wants to be good. However, Cujo wins the battle for the title of better villain by one other factor: body count. Cujo kills three people in his film, while Church doesn’t kill anyone in Pet Sematary. Sure, Church has other undead allies to do that, but it’s hard to be too afraid of a villain if they’re not an imminent threat to one’s life. That said, if Cujo and Church actually fought, Church might win, if only because he has otherworldly forces on his side.
