Cult of Chucky Ending & Multiple Dolls Explained

Cult of Chucky ups the ante for the Child’s Play franchise by introducing multiple dolls and new powers, and sports a completely bonkers ending. The usual perception of direct to video horror sequels is that they’re terrible, and for the most part, it’s not an unfair assertion. Anyone who’s seen Children of the Corn 7, or The Mangler 3 can attest to just how bad direct to video sequels can sink. However, they’re not all bad, and in the case of 2013’s Curse of Chucky and 2017’s Cult of Chucky, are some of the best in their franchise.

One thing keeping Child’s Play afloat is the continued guidance of Don Mancini, creator of the property, and writer of all seven films in the original series. Mancini has also directed Seed, Curse, and Cult of Chucky, although he quite famously had nothing to do with MGM’s recent remake of the original starring Mark Hamill. In Bride and Seed of Chucky, Mancini took Child’s Play in a more comedic direction, embracing the self-referential style Scream and its ilk popularized in the late-1990s. By Curse of Chucky though, Mancini clearly sensed fans wanted something different, and opted to take Chucky back to his more horrifying roots.

Curse introduced a new nemesis for Chucky in Nica, a paraplegic young woman played by Fiona Dourif, daughter of Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif. While initially appearing like a reboot, Curse does eventually tie-in to the prior films, and ends with Chucky framing Nica for the murder of her family. Cult sees Nica committed to an insane asylum for the crimes, but Chucky of course eventually arrives to continue tormenting her. This time though, Charles Lee Ray has picked up some new abilities guaranteed to make Nica’s fight harder.

Cult of Chucky Includes Multiple Possessed Dolls

Cult of Chucky Ending & Multiple Dolls Explained

Fans will recall that in the original Child’s Play, it’s revealed that Chucky gained the ability to transfer his soul into a doll by practicing voodoo. This thread comes up a few more times throughout the series, but is taken to a new extreme in Cult of Chucky, as the Chuckster has managed to learn a new voodoo spell that allows him to inhabit multiple host bodies simultaneously. Naturally, this sees Chucky use multiple dolls to both terrorize Nica and kill off the other staff and patients inside the hospital. It also explained several instances where it seemed like Chucky was somehow in two places at once, since he literally was, in a sense.

Cult of Chucky Ends With Chucky Possessing Nica

While the logical assumption to make is that after he’s finished torturing Nica, Chucky plans to kill her, that’s actually not the case. In an ending that left jaws dropped, Chucky instead possesses Nica’s body, enabling it to walk again. He then uses her to murder Nica’s abusive caregiver Dr. Foley, before taking off with Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s bride. Alongside the two are also possessed Chucky and Tiffany dolls. While all this was going on, Chucky’s old target Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) had made an unsuccessful rescue attempt of Nica and ended up locked inside a padded cell himself. Thankfully, Cult of Chucky’s loose ends are expected to be tied up in Syfy’s upcoming Child’s Play TV series, produced by Mancini and starring the same cast.
