Curb Your Enthusiasm 10 Ways The Series Has Changed Over The Years

Larry David has come a long way from Seinfeld. As a whole, Larry David has come a long way from just being a comic on the streets of New York. The man has a lot under his belt and is one of the few comic writers out there who has evolved gracefully through time. The best example of this is his modern take on comic theater, Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Having been around for more than a decade, Larry David has brought his character through an ever-changing world and shifts in his own life. While seeing Larry argue over a sandwich for 10 seasons is entertainment enough, Curb Your Enthusiasm has taken a few turns over the years that have made it far different from its initial pilot and season.

10 Marty Funkhouser Passes Away

One of the saddest changes to occur is a new actor and characters being cast to replace Freddy Funkhouser. For those wondering why Vince Vaughn assumed the role of Freddy Funkhouser in season 10, it is sadly because Marty’s actor, Bob Einstein, had actually died in early 2020. Marty Funkhauser has been a core part of the series for years.

As part Larry David’s sordid inner circle, Marty played the dry stickler whose good nature and large family would often be the victims of Larry’s various schemes and faux pas (such as when Larry stole flowers off of his mother’s grave or how Larry inadvertently broke his nephew’s arm). Surprisingly, he was still one of Larry’s best friends and a beloved fan favorite.

9 Sammi Greene Grows Up

Ashly Holloway has had quite the unique acting gig in her life by growing up alongside Curb Your Enthusiasm. As Sammi Greene, the earliest seasons often saw Sammi playing dolls while her parents (which often resulted in Susie Greene’s letting out some outrageous curses or one of Jeff’s affairs being revealed).

However, in recent seasons, the writers did give fans an update on how a grown-up Sammi was getting on. She was engaged to a war veteran, with the two eventually marrying in the season 9 finale. Reflecting on all the seasons, its strange to think how quickly time has gone by – especially with the significant break between season 8 and 9.

8 Cheryl Divorces Larry

One of the biggest changes to happen in the latter half of the series was having Cheryl eventually but inevitably divorce Larry. This was in response to Larry’s own divorce around that time and made for some interesting plots in the aftermath. In season 6, Larry ruins his relationship in the only way that he can.

While Cheryl tries to make a desperate, last call to him while on a terrifying flight, Larry tells her to call back later because he was already dealing with the TiVo guy. In season 6, after a brief relationship with Loretta Black, Larry tries to win Cheryl back by making her the center of his Seinfeld revival but to no avail. They hint at another relationship in season 10, but Ted Danson immediately tries to cut in.

7 Ted Danson And Cheryl Start Dating

After Cheryl divorces Larry, she doesn’t stay single for too long. After dating the guy who made “No Fly Zone” underwear, she eventually starts dating and becomes a long-term partner to Ted Danson, who also recently divorced Mary Steenburgen (in the story, not in real life).

This breaks Larry’s heart given that he wasn’t just losing his wife but because she ended up dating, arguably his biggest nemesis in the entire series. This relationship would create even more dating possibilities after Cheryl and Larry have an affair, and Larry gets in Ted’s crosshairs.

6 Larry Starts Dating

One of the best parts of Larry’s divorce was that it opened so many story opportunities for dating arcs. While season 4’s arc tried to show that Larry David can’t be with anyone else but Cheryl, he has, surprisingly, been pretty active within the dating scene.

For instance, he had his hilarious, break-up adventure with Loretta Black and he even dated Elizabeth Banks at one point too. Cheryl was always trusted to create an order with Larry’s life; but after seeing all of his romantic exploits, it’s obvious that Cheryl wasn’t making Curb Your Enthusiasm funnier.

5 Antoinette Quits

While Cheryl often had to live with Larry’s neuroticism, few people actually had to experience and deal with it at work the same way that Larry’s original assistant, Antoinette Spolar did. Having to do Larry’s various errands while also taking notes for his various neuroticism, Antoinette has had to deal with a lot. Things did reach a boiling point a couple of times.

The first was back in season 4 when he overtasked her after she broke up with her boyfriend. She quit working for him and threatened to expose all of his lies and deceit to the world. However, Antoinette would go on to seemingly leave for good after “The Smiley Face,” where she takes time off to grieve for her father and her mother assumes her place (but not for long). Since then, Larry has had to deal with a constipated Carrie Brownstein, Leon, and one of his archenemies in season 10.

4 Susie Finally Gets Back At Jeff

Jeff Greene’s rampant infidelity has been an ongoing gag/storyline for the series. It’s obvious that he doesn’t really care to be married to Susie anymore, but the threat of Susie armed with a divorce lawyer is too much for him. Instead, he’s taken to having a variety of affairs over the years.

While some of these have blown back at him and Larry, Susie has always been the butt of the joke. That is until season 9 when Susie reveals her attraction to a certain cowboy in a hat. Fans would say agree that this was karma coming as it did allow for Susie to finally get back at him for cheating on her.

3 Leon Moves In

Cheryl left a massive hole in the series after her role was diminished. In addition to being Larry’s conscience in a world where he has none, she was also the most consistent person that he’d rapport with and would often provide some words of wisdom. Her absence left a real danger of Larry just ranting to air for a while. Fortunately, that spot was more than filled when J.B. Smoove’s Leon Black stayed with Larry after Loretta and the kids left.

Since then, he has been Larry’s roommate, sidekick, wingman, confidant, and assistant. Leon has been the perfect comedic partner for Larry, helping make some of the funniest scenes in the entire series.

2 Larry Becomes More Aggressive

When the series started, Larry David was simply critical if not honest to a fault. He’d get into meaningless debates with people and just make sly remarks that got under people’s skin. However, as the show evolved, he got even more irritable and angry.

Whether the writing has called for it, Larry’s character on Curb Your Enthusiasm has screamed more and gotten into a lot more fights. It was shocking seeing Larry at the beginning of season 10 take someone’s selfie stick and break it over his leg. Old Larry would’ve just made a sly comment. New Larry seems to be out for blood in a world that has annoyed him for too long.

1 Larry Becomes Way Too Petty

Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, admits that one of his biggest mistakes was making Snoopy more than a dog. That same loss of grounding may be affecting Curb Your Enthusiasm today, as Larry’s adventures have gotten much more grandiose.

Season 10 saw Larry take things too far when he decides that he would launch an entire coffee shop to spite one that he was mildly inconvenienced by. While he can certainly afford to do these things, it’s a little too quirky for Larry David to be pulling schtick that Homer Simpson has been doing for 20 years.
