Curb Your Enthusiasm: 5 Things We Liked About Season 10 (& 5 We Didn’t)

Curb your Enthusiasm’s tenth season had a lot going for it, but there were also a few parts that seemed to keep it from being perfect.

For a show that takes long gaps between seasons, Curb Your Enthusiasm is still impressive in turning up in best-of-decade lists. That comes down to the series being so self-aware, as every season has a storyline that’s simultaneously about nothing and also a parody of current events.

The tenth season improved upon the previous one and this has led to the announcement of an eleventh season follow-up. While there are many plus points Season 10 brought, there were also certain things that didn’t hit the mark. These include shortfalls in storylines or stuff that weren’t present. Still, there also needs to be an appreciation for what the series did right, so let’s take a look at both good and bad.

10 Liked: Larry’s Continued Rants

The trademark for the series is Larry David’s liking toward long rants. There were some reservations he might not bring these in Season 10 due to the sensitive nature of today’s pop culture, but this wasn’t the case as Larry was back in his ranting glory.

The show took a different take on this aspect by making Larry go off in his own defense more than attacking others for no reason. This way, one could see the point Larry was trying to make while enjoying the way he made things worse for himself in classic fashion.

9 Didn’t Like: Too Much Profanity

There’s no doubt that much of the series’ humor comes from the potty mouths of the characters. This was magnified in hilarious fashion in a prior season finale, but by now the profanity seems to be rather forced than used in witty humor.

Season 10 made it so that the characters were spitting out bad words for the benefit of comedy, but this just seemed like a lazy way to get a laugh. After all, hearing swear words only works when it’s creative, not when it becomes a normal occurrence.

8 Liked: Making Fun Of Political Correctness

It’s always a risk poking fun at stuff that can lead to cancel culture, but Curb Your Enthusiasm found a way to work around it. Although Me Too was the backdrop, the comedy was centered around how people blow things out of proportion, not on the topic itself.

This allowed for the season to appeal to those who aren’t fond of excessive political correctness while also steering clear of any controversies. It’s the kind of smart writing that’s gotten the show where it is all these years.

7 Didn’t Like: Larry & Cheryl’s Relationship Progress

One can’t expect the show to bring couples back together as it goes in romantic comedies. However, the season did try to add to the list of plot twists by showing Larry and Cheryl hooking up at the beginning. Some fans wanted them to get back together, but the execution was flawed.

For one thing, the two didn’t officially reconcile, instead simply being involved in a hook-up to set up Larry’s fight with Ted Danson later on. All this was too predictable, meaning an actual reconciliation would have actually been the more creative route to take.

6 Liked: Larry Continuing As A Rich And Famous Loser

When Curb Your Enthusiasm started, the idea of seeing Larry as a down-on-luck guy was more believable since not everyone knew he was such a big deal in real life. Still, it’s a good thing the tenth season has continued showing him as a famous loser since this makes things even funnier.

There have been many callbacks to earlier shenanigans of Larry’s in order to assert how he’ll always remain hated in-universe. Had Larry actually tasted good luck, it would have been too close to reality, so kudos for Season 10 to continue this pattern.

5 Didn’t Like: Larry Hooking Up With Cheryl’s Sister

It would have appeared as if Larry could not have had any more low moments for himself, only for the season to depict him hooking up with his former sister-in-law. Even for Larry, this was a pretty low move, one that is more eerie than funny.

Sure, the series is meant to feature cringe comedy, but this really was too unsettling to be comedic in the long-run. After all, it inadvertently brought in dramatic energy to the dynamic between Larry and Cheryl, thereby removing quite a bit of comedic material from the angle.

4 Liked: Abundance Of Celebrity Guest Appearances

There have been enough guest star appearances by now that they can be ranked on who was best and who wasn’t. The tenth season expanded on this, bringing in names like Jon Hamm, Timothy Olyphant, Mila Kunis, Jonah Hill, and Sean Penn.

The joke here is that the celebrities are presented as caricatures of themselves, or cast in outlandish roles that you wouldn’t see them in normally. It’s nice to see these big names in a comedic light and Season 10 did a good job of bringing them forward.

3 Didn’t Like: No Seinfeld Reunion

Since it didn’t happen in the latest season, a Seinfeld reunion is now on the wish lists for things fans want to see in Season 11. It’s a shame it wasn’t seen sooner, as there has been over a decade since the Seinfeld reunion angle had happened on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Much has changed in the world since then, so a reunion episode will feel just as fresh as it did back then. Not to mention the opportunity of seeing its cast interact with Larry once again, so the fact that Season 10 ignored it was certainly a bad move.

2 Liked: Mocha Joe Feud

It’s a testament to the creativity of the series that it can stretch out a petty act of vengeance an entire season. Larry entered a feud with Mocha Joe over the silliest reasons, leading to an even sillier act of spiting the guy by opening his own coffee shop with lower prices.

The resolution for this angle arrived only at the end of the season, rounding things up in classic Curb Your Enthusiasm fashion. It went with Larry’s characterization to blow things out of proportion, along with delivering a quality angle fans will no doubt remember.

1 Didn’t Like: Lack Of Character Development

After twenty years and ten seasons, it would seem natural for some things to be different about a person. Larry has changed relatively little over the series, with his bad points being too much in focus. His hook-ups with Cheryl and her sister instead were the opposite of character development.

It would have been good to see some level of humanity in the main character, which didn’t even need to be an emotional one. Sure, it’s funny to see him be so immature, but certain aspects of him have become too outdated and it showed in Season 10.
