Daredevil is Finally Free But Hes Embracing a Dark New Path

Warning: contains a preview of Daredevil #36!

It’s been a long road on the way to redemption, but Daredevil is finally a free man in the wake of Bulleye’s attack on New York City. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s acclaimed run on the series has seen Matt Murdock experience the other side of the judicial system, having been tried and sent to prison over an accidental death. Now he’s out and a new Hell’s Kitchen is waiting to greet him.

Matt’s legal troubles began in the very first issue of Daredevil Vol 6, when a routine night on patrol ends with Matt accidentally killing a man during a robbery. Matt agonizes over his actions and after having heart-to-heart conversations with his friends and his superhero colleagues, he resolves to pay for his crime by going to court and pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Having his twin brother, Mike, fill in for him as Matt Murdock and convincing Elektra to take care Hell’s Kitchen as Daredevil, Matt was free to pay his debt to society. In prison as Daredevil thanks to a legal loophole, Matt discovered a secret facility within the prison producing a behavior-altering compound known as RE-CID. The discovery of the lab gave Matt a chance to end his sentence early and continue his work back on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen thanks to a deal with the FBI. However, with the knowledge that Bullseye was out racking up a body count, Matt escaped from prison, amped-up from accidental RE-CID exposure. With Bullseye defeated and the superhero community at his back, Matt had a choice make. And, in preview pages shared by AIPT, it seems that choice was to put his faith in the law one last time.

The preview pages for Daredevil #36 begin with a news broadcast highlighting the tense confrontation. Despite Daredevil’s dissolution of the RE-CID facility and his assistance bringing in Bullseye, law enforcement wants to nullify the deal after Matt’s escape from jail. While the heroes of New York balk at allowing him to be taken in, Matt seemingly holds steadfast in his belief in the system and willingly goes with the police. Thankfully, it seems his friends were able to argue that the breakout was due to RE-CID, securing him the FBI’s promised deal.

Fortune finally seems to be shining upon Matt Murdock who, after an additional month in prison, finds himself free and back into his loved ones’ arms. But even with his newfound freedom, Matt has a lot to catch up on as he departs with Elektra, who took on his role in order to persuade him to help her with a dark new plan to end the Hand. Matt’s faith in the criminal justice system was all but shattered by his experiences in prison, and choosing to go with Elektra rather than Foggy and Kirsten McDuffie shows where the vigilante’s priorities currently lie.

But however he’s been changed, Matt will soon be in for the fight of his life. With Matt’s brother Mike and Wilson Fisk’s son having big plans for Hell’s kitchen, Fisk preparing to wed Typhoid Mary, and Devil’s Reign on the horizon, Daredevil won’t be able to enjoy his freedom for very long, even if Bullseye is out of the picture.
