The Dark Souls franchise is filled with many notable and very interesting locations, each of which seem more imaginative and magical than the last. As each game’s budget increases, so too do the elaborate nature of the locations.
Dark Souls 3 contains a truly fantastic location in the Cathedral of the Deep. The Cathedral is many a players’ favorite, and, like many locations within Dark Souls, it is steeped in rich lore than many players may not know about. Dark Souls doesn’t tell you much, and even that which it does tell you remains shrouded in obscurity and ambiguity. These are ten things you didn’t know about the Cathedral of the Deep.
10 The Church Of The Deep
What exactly The Deep is within Dark Souls remains unclear. But the cleric Aldrich saw visions of the deep sea and that the dregs of the so-called Dark would sink to the bottom of the ocean and form the building blocks of the world… or something like that. Either way, Aldrich built an entire religion based around his experiences and visions, and this religion became known as the Church of the Deep. At the heart of the Church is the Cathedral of the Deep.
9 It’s The Resting Place Of Aldrich
Aldrich is perhaps the coolest villain within the Dark Souls lore, known more commonly as Aldrich, Devourer of Gods. Aldrich was just another cleric, but he began to experience visions of the deep sea. These visions rotted his mind, and he began practicing cannibalism, including on children. The clerics of his Church provided him with sacrifices, often indulging in their misery. Eventually, Aldrich grew so corrupted that he turned into a mass of rotting flesh and bones.
8 It’s Meant To Seal Away The Deep
Aldrich’s followers are known as the Deacons. They act as both priests and warriors, skillfully adept at pyromancy. In the Cathedral, they can be seen spotting red robes and glowing red eyes. The Deacons inhabited and helped protect the Cathedral of the Deep, which was originally built to seal away and contain the horrors of the unknown Deep. But again, what exactly The Deep is remains an unanswered question.
7 It Was Once Peaceful
The Cathedral of the Deep was once a very peaceful and pristine location. It originally served as a religious center meant to contain The Deep, and it was inhabited by the Deacons, as previously discussed. However, The Deep acts much like The Ring from Lord of the Rings, and it began to corrupt.
The Church grew foul, as did its inhabitants. Before long, the Cathedral went from peaceful religious center to nightmare housing unspeakable evil.
6 Aldrich’s Archdeacons
While serving as a peaceful religious institution, the Cathedral was overseen by Aldrich and his archdeacons. These people are known as the Deacons of the Deep, and they are the group that the player fights within the Cathedral. The archdeacons included Aldrich’s most devoted follower, Archdeacon Royce, as well as McDonnell and Klimt. They were tasked with protecting Aldrichs’ empty tomb from intruders such as The Ashen One.
5 The Evangelists
One of the toughest early enemies of Dark Souls 3 are the evangelists. These are large, round women with circular hats who use powerful magic and laugh at their enemies. These evangelists are found in the Undead Settlement, but they are actually agents of the Cathedral of the Deep. They traveled to the Undead Settlement in order to procure victims for Aldrich, who was residing within the nearby Cathedral.
4 The Road Of Sacrifices
One of the toughest locations in Dark Souls 3 is the Road of Sacrifices which leads to the Crucifixion Woods.
Judging by the name, players can probably assume the purpose of the Road of Sacrifices, especially knowing the function of the Evangelists. This is the path that the evangelists and others working for the Cathedral take while transporting victims between the Undead Settlement and the Cathedral of the Deep.
3 The Grave Wardens
The Grave Wardens are other members of the Cathedral of the Deep. These enemies are found outside the Cathedral patrolling the grounds. They are very tall, skeletal beings wielding Warden Twinblades. These Grave Wardens are actually tasked with disposing of the seemingly-endless parade of rising corpses that protrude from the ground outside the Cathedral of the Deep. It’s nice to know that even an evil Cathedral has custodians.
2 The Giant Slaves
One of the most impressive and frightening aspects of the Cathedral of the Deep is the giant slaves. These are two massive giants who appear docile but attack the player whenever they get close.
Not much is known regarding the background of the Giant Slaves. All that is known is that they have been imprisoned within the Cathedral and forced to defend its secrets from outside intruders. Including The Ashen One.
1 Rosaria, Mother Of Rebirth
Rosaria’s Bed Chamber is a hidden area within the Cathedral of the Deep that some may players may never have found. Finding it requires the player to traverse the narrow stone arches on the roof before jumping down onto a stone platform. Inside a room, the player will find Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth. Rosaria allows the player to both reallocate various attributes—should they wish to change how they approach the game—and change their physical appearance.
