Darkest Dungeon 2 Beginners Guide (Tips Tricks & Strategies)

Darkest Dungeon 2, the sequel to Red Hook Studio’s Darkest Dungeon, is now in early access and brings with it a distinct experience from the first game. In this sequel, players will be abandoning the Hamlet and progressing through the world on a wagon. While combat maintains many of its unique characteristics, fans of the first Darkest Dungeon should prepare themselves to tackle a unique new game.

The first Darkest Dungeon featured a Hamlet that could be upgraded over the course of the game. To do so, players could combine the various characters into parties of four to tackle the different dungeons. As players conquered the dungeons, they would amass various resources that could be used to strengthen the characters and the Hamlet, and prepare them for tougher challenges.

In Darkest Dungeon 2, the Hamlet and dungeon crawling was abandoned, and a system similar to Slay the Spire was implemented. Players will instead be riding a wagon within a Region, and choosing between route options that lead to various types of nodes. At the end of a Region, players will find an Inn which will function as a base for characters to regroup.

What is New in Darkest Dungeon 2

Darkest Dungeon 2’s new game cycle consists of traveling from Inn to Inn. Here, the Wagon and the party can be upgraded, items can be bought, and preparations for the next trip can be made. When leaving the Inn, players must choose a Region to traverse. This will mainly define what type of enemies will be fought.

Darkest Dungeon 2 also has a new roguelite progression system that functions via Hope. As players progress through the game, they will acquire this “currency” in many different ways. When a run ends, either by finishing, losing all party members, or abandoning it, the game will reward Hope based on performance. This Hope will level up the profile. As players gain new profile levels in Darkest Dungeon 2, new characters and items will be unlocked for subsequent runs.

Traversing a region consists of choosing between branching paths, that continue to branch down the road. Therefore, selecting a path at the start of a Region might lock players into or out of, other paths down the line. Each route leads to a node. These vary greatly and can encompass battle scenarios, special vendors, or even ways for characters to gain new abilities.

Unlike the first game, Darkest Dungeon 2’s party members are chosen and set at the very beginning. The only way to change party composition mid-game would be to reach the Inn after having a character die. However, this substitute party member is chosen at random from the pool of characters the players have unlocked. To acquire all character abilities in Darkest Dungeon 2, characters’ individual storylines must be unlocked at special nodes.

Combat has also suffered quite a few changes the biggest of which is the absence of Accuracy. Players and enemies will always hit their attacks unless status conditions are imposed. The two most common that allow for misses will be a buff that gives a 50% chance to dodge, and a debuff that gives a 50% chance to miss.

Darkest Dungeon 2 has also introduced a relationship system in which characters gain or lose rapport with each other as the game progresses. This can lead to positive or negative effects based on the nature of the relationship. As stress grows, negative relationships become more likely, which could lead to detrimental rivalries within the party.

The relationship system is now also intertwined with the sanity system. When characters lose their sanity in Darkest Dungeon 2, they will suffer a Meltdown and their HP will drop to about 10%. Additionally, they will also suffer penalties to their relationships with other characters. Any positive affinity will be eliminated, and all negative rapport will exacerbate.

Tips & Tricks for Darkest Dungeon 2

Plan Ahead: Preparation and planning are still crucial in Darkest Dungeon 2. As players learn what types of enemies they will encounter in each region, they can take steps to prevent, for example, status effects those enemies tend to impose. The Inn can often offer a variety of items that helps players deal with these conditions or even provide a resistance buff until the characters’ next Embarkment.

Don’t Avoid Combat: Although it can often seem appealing to avoid combat, it is very important not to do so. The first reason is to prevent Loathing. Having a high Loathing makes the game more difficult, and players should seek fights that reduce it. The other reason is that rewards are important to upgrade the characters in Darkest Dungeon 2. Either by obtaining Relics or Mastery points to level up their abilities, players must strive to strengthen the party to face the bigger challenges that await down the line.

Don’t Neglect Relationships: Making an effort to develop good relationships between the party can be very beneficial. Not only does it avoid the harsh penalties of having bad relationships, but it can also be very valuable in and out of combat as players can heal HP or stress for free and even perform combos together. A way to lower stress and promote good relationships is to listen to the characters before choosing a path, as a little balloon over their heads will indicate the road they prefer.

Be Aggressive: Although utility and healing can be very appealing in Darkest Dungeon 2, players should consider an aggressive playstyle. Road encounters will give players a total of five rounds to finish the fight, or it will simply end, providing no rewards. Playing aggressive has never been a bad tactic in the previous Darkest Dungeon however, in the sequel, it seems to provide more value than other playstyles.

Take Advantage of the Wagon: As soon as players get started in Darkest Dungeon 2 they should aim to destroy every object on the road as they can often contain items. In the Wagon, characters will heal over time and continue to interact with each other as it moves. Depending on their stress and the amount of Loathing, these interactions can have positive or negative results.

Manage Characters Stress: The Plague Doctor and Man-at-arms can be very effective stress healers. Leveling up their Ounce of Prevention and Bolster abilities, will provide one stress heal to the entire party in Darkest Dungeon 2. Players can also use combat items such as Laudanum to heal stress. Should characters instead require emergency HP healing, players can have them skip their turn at low health to gain some hit points in exchange for stress damage.

Use Items: Players will often find themselves having to destroy items to gain space. Although it can feel like a waste, every destroyed item will give a bit of Hope, which will help in future runs. That being said, players should use combat and Inn items as much as possible. Inn items provide buffs that last the entire Region crawl, and combat items in Darkest Dungeon 2 can be used as a free action in combat to provide an edge to keep the party as healthy and stress-free as possible.

Manage the Flame: The brighter the flame the more combat buffs the party will have. The opposite is also true which is why running out of flame can lead to unexpected combat encounters against very powerful and buffed enemies. The more Loathing players have, the faster the light will snuff out. Players can therefore take advantage of a bright flame to look for fights and reduce Loathing, which will reduce flame degradation.
