Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Darth Vader #17

In a new Star Wars comic, it has been revealed that Darth Vader believed Emperor Palpatine was scared he might kill his own son, Luke Skywalker. It isn’t such a big leap to take that the Emperor could have hoped for Luke to replace Vader.

Throughout the original trilogy, it was teased that Luke Skywalker might give into the dark side. When revealed to be the son of the galaxy’s most feared Sith, it suddenly made sense why he should fear such a doomed destiny. As Vader relayed the news about his son being behind the destruction of the Death Star, Palpatine suggested that Luke could be a powerful asset. Taking place after The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: Darth Vader #17 expands on this sentiment. The latest issue is written by Greg Pak with art by Raffaele Ienco and Alex Sinclair.

As Darth Vader flies his TIE Fighter behind Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing, he speaks to his son, revealing that his master wants him alive. However, he recognizes that the Emperor is scared that won’t happen, as Vader is more powerful than Luke at this point in his Jedi training. Interestingly, this doesn’t cause him to want to take Luke down, as he’s content to feel his fear through the Force. “You know you cannot escape me, my son. But today you will. Because my master has shown his hand. He wants you alive. So it will have to be enough to know your fear.”

It was previously revealed in Darth Vader #11 that the Emperor has an entire cult of groupies on Exegol known as “the Sith Eternal,” ready to replace Vader at any moment. When Vader learned about them, Palpatine commanded the cult to attack. Although he quickly defeated the Sith Eternal, this revelation likely impacted his view of his master, especially going into Return of the Jedi where he started expressing his lack of confidence in the Emperor. The Sith have always had their own personal agenda, seeking self-interest above all else, consistently thinking several steps ahead of themselves. If Palpatine already has his Final Order fleet of Star Destroyers hidden on Exegol, he likely has other secret plans that could unfold much sooner.

Throughout Darth Vader comics, storylines have helped bridge a gap between Vader’s allegiance and betrayal to his master. In the original trilogy, Luke’s compassion was the catalyst for Vader’s redemption, but recent issues have incorporated other reasons why the Sith might be trying to get out of the relationship. His assumption that Palpatine wants him to keep Luke alive so he can take his place someday might be the thing that helped seal the deal. Eventually, Darth Vader’s suspicions are confirmed as the Emperor tempts Luke with the offer.
