Darth Vaders ObiWan Kenobi Role Could Undermine A New Hope

Fans of the galaxy far, far away couldn’t be more excited for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series has been years in development, but its release date is now hurtling toward fans, faster than the Millennium Falcon making the Kessel Run. The series is set in the traumatic aftermath of Order 66, so fans will get to see a version of the galaxy that’s dominated by the Emperor and his henchmen. Overall, there’s a resounding “hopeless and fatalistic” tone. With that as the backdrop, Obi-Wan will seek to preserve hope in the galaxy at large, but first he has to find a way to reignite hope in himself.

It was only a few weeks ago that Disney released the trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that only added to the series’ hype. Fans got a glimpse of a young Luke Skywalker, the town of Anchorhead and a small portion of John Williams’ fantastic score. They also got to see that the series will feature a litany of evil, lightsaber-wielding Inquisitors. However, what fans really want to see is a fight between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. That concept might be exciting on the surface, but it could end up undermining A New Hope. Here’s why.

Darth Vaders ObiWan Kenobi Role Could Undermine A New Hope

It’s not just a fan theory that Obi-Wan Kenobi could show Darth Vader fighting his former Jedi master. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the two will have a legendary lightsaber duel in the series, touting the confrontation as “the rematch of the century.” Since then, there have been rumors about a pair of duels between the rivals, concept art for their fights, possible leaked videos — the whole nine yards.

Meanwhile, fans were trying to reason out how the Obi-Wan and Vader fight could happen without causing a problem for Star Wars continuity. As part of that conversation, many fans pointed to a line that Vader told Luke in Return of the Jedi. As Luke told his father that there was still good inside him, Vader declined and told his son, “Obi-Wan once thought as you do.” That seems to indicate that Obi-Wan tried to turn Vader back to the Light Side of the Force. Yet that never happened. So, if Obi-Wan tried to reason with his former apprentice before fighting him, it would explain that line from Return of the Jedi.

While a fight between Vader and Obi-Wan would solve that one mystery, it also creates a whole new problem. When Obi-Wan showed up at the Death Star in A New Hope, Vader knew he was there. He said, “I sense something — a presence I’ve not felt since…” The Dark Lord didn’t finish his sentence, but it’s easy to assume that he was referencing their fiery duel on Mustafar. That was the moment that Obi-Wan ruined his life, and believing that the two best-friends-turned arch-enemies hadn’t seen each other since then was the emotional crux of their fight on the Death Star.

Taking that into context, it’s easy to see how a fight between Obi-Wan and Vader in the Disney+ series could end up undermining their final confrontation. Now, the last time that they saw each other will no longer be Mustafar, and that puts into question how monumental this new duel will be. From an emotional level and from a dueling perspective, Mustafar sets a high bar. Therefore, the only way that Darth Vader’s presence in Obi-Wan Kenobi won’t undermine A New Hope is if the new duel between Vader and Kenobi is absolutely legendary with both parties leaving the fight in emotional turmoil. Hopefully, that’s what happens because undermining A New Hope would be sacrilege to most Star Wars fans.
