Developer 13AM Games and publisher WayForward have announced Dawn of the Monsters, a new 2D brawler featuring kaiju and mecha in cooperative combat. WayForward is responsible for the Shantae series along with many other IPs, and has also been developing the anticipated remake of Advance Wars 1+2 for Nintendo Switch.

The kaiju (or “giant monster”) genre has always seemed like a tempting market for video games, but very few titles in the genre have risen to prominence. Rampage was one of the earliest and most famous examples of a kaiju video game, and is still fondly remembered today. But even with all of the Godzilla spin-off games and other interactive entries in the genre, massive creatures like the ones seen on the big screen rarely make a truly memorable appearance in the world of video games. It seems like, in the grand scheme of things, it’s just hard to make a good Godzilla game.

Now WayForward and 13AM Games are offering their own take on the kaiju game genre with Dawn of the Monsters. According to IGN, the game is a cooperative beat-’em-up with customizable kaiju, mecha, and a gigantic fighting scientist who’s very reminiscent of Ultraman. Players will fight groups of enemy kaiju across the fictional New Toronto, causing tons of damage to the fully-destructible city in the process. Dawn of the Monsters will launch with four playable characters, each with unique movesets and playstyles. WayForward also states that the game’s kaiju designs are the work of original Godzilla creator Shiji Nishikawa and Godzilla comic book artist Matt Frank.

There will be 35 different missions in Dawn of the Monsters, all playable in two player co-op. In addition to smashing hordes of smaller kaiju, players will have to coordinate in order to take on huge bosses. The game will be coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in the first half of 2022.

Dawn of the Monsters has already drawn comparisons to the Neo Geo classic King of the Monsters, as well as the PS2 fan favorite War of the Monsters. Given the title, it’s probable that both of these games served as at least partial inspiration for the new game. Dawn of the Monsters may not have the visibility of PlatinumGames’ long-awaited Bayonetta 3, which will also feature kaiju battles, or the other mysterious kaiju game that Platinum reportedly has in development, but Dawn of the Monsters’ combo system, presentation, and pedigree make it seem like an excellent way to fulfill the kaiju gaming fantasy.
