While Diana might be the first Wonder Woman in terms of character creation, DC Comics has revealed that, chronologically, Nubia predates Diana. In both Infinite Frontier and the newest Black Label series, Wonder Woman: Historia, Nubia is an Amazon warrior long before Diana is. Considering her present roles and developing history, she could be considered a “Wonder Woman” who precedes Diana in the role.
Nubia was first introduced in 1973 by co-creators Robert Kanigher and Don Heck, in Wonder Woman #204. She would reappear in 1999 in Wonder Woman Annual #8 under the name “Nu’Bia.” In her second appearance, it was revealed that she was actually an Amazon champion—before Diana was. She had won the same tournament Diana had, but the mission given to her was different. She was tasked with guarding Doom’s Doorway.
As of late, Nubia has been making a triumphant return. She was a core part of the Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman back up stories and, during Infinite Frontier, she has been ruling as the queen of Themyscira in Hippolyta’s place. However, the back-up story of the current ongoing Wonder Woman series—Young Diana—also placed Nubia as the guardian in charge of protecting the Amazons from the dangers of Doom’s Doorway. The dangers Nubia faced and the actual competition have not been shared yet, but considering how much attention is being paid to the Amazons (and Nubia specifically) it wouldn’t be surprising if these stories show up within the next several months of Wonder Woman-related comic releases.
In Wonder Woman: Historia #1—DC’s new Black Label series telling the history of the Amazons—Nubia is one of the original thirty Amazons born of the Greek goddesses. This series has the creative team of Kelly Sue DeConnick, Hi-Fi, Arif Prianto, Phil Jimenez, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Clayton Cowles. In the first issue, Nubia is part of the tribe of Demeter. While this series does not exist within the current canon of Infinite Frontier, it continues a current trend occurring with Nubia. For many years, Nubia has struggled to be a mainstay in DC Comics. However, she is finally making headway and has been taking on more and more importance within recent comics. In record time she has become a queen, a Wonder Woman in the future (Future State’s future, to be precise), and proven to still be a highly skilled warrior and respectable leader.
Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana Special—created by Jordie Bellaire, Paulina Ganucheau, Kendall Goode, and Becca Carey—established that Nubia was already operating as a champion for the Amazons long before Diana would officially become Wonder Woman and venture into man’s world. Though that was her chosen mission, it is not the only mission that exists. Diana and Nubia have similar abilities and due to her age—and potential to be an original Amazon in the groups’ history—she would likely have more combat experience than Diana does. The two have frequently been portrayed as equals. They have been clay sisters, Amazon sisters, and battle well together. Yet Nubia is much older and could finally take her rightful place within the Amazon’s history and future. While Diana was the first to wear the Wonder Woman mantle in terms of publishing history, Nubia preceded her as a Wonder Woman in Amazon history in both canon and the Amazons’ newest Black Label universe from DC Comics.
