DC Future State Theory Scarecrow Has Turned Gotham Against Batman

DC’s Future State will reveal Gotham is destined to reject Batman – but has it been driven to do so by the Scarecrow? In January 2021, DC Comics will launch one of the boldest initiatives in its 86-year-history. The entire comic book line will essentially be shut down for the next two months, replaced by a series of books that chart the future of the DC Universe.

The various Batman books will be set in the near future, revealing Gotham City will reject Batman and the rest of the Bat-Family. The city is now governed by an organization called the Magistrate, and vigilantes are hunted down relentlessly. Bruce Wayne will be believed dead, apparently murdered in an alley just like his parents, and a new Batman will take to the streets of Gotham – Tim Fox, son of Batman’s trusted confidant and tech guru Lucius Fox.

This dark future has already been set up in the current Batman range, but recent previews have raised an intriguing possibility; could it be that the Scarecrow is the one orchestrating all this madness?

The Seeds Have Already Been Sown For DC’s Future State

The seeds have already been sown for Batman’s Future State, with Gotham City turning against Batman. The problem is that the Dark Knight and his enemies have long been caught up in a cycle of escalating violence, with the citizens of Gotham huddling indoors and desperately hoping the latest bout of insanity would end. The “Joker War” arc was the worst yet, with the Clown Prince of Crime leaving Gotham in chaos for days, while a wounded and hallucinating Batman recovered. There was a time when the Bat-Signal stood for hope, but for days nobody seemed to answer, and now nobody really believes in it anymore.

In Detective Comics #1031, Gotham’s division over Batman began to erupt into violence. Protestors took to the streets carrying signs saying “No More Bats,” a flash mob supported by a ringleader named the Mirror who manipulated the public with ease. “Gotham — rise,” the Mirror cried. “Your mission is to take a long, hard look in the mirror and ask what you see!” Other Gothamites opposed the Mirror’s flash mob, turning up wearing Bat-masks, and things got nasty for a brief time. Days later, Gotham chose a new mayor – Christopher Nakano, who had stood on an anti-vigilante platform. A former officer in the GCPD, Nakano believes Batman and his allies are more trouble than they’re worth.

It’s not particularly hard to see how the current Batman plots ultimately lead to DC’s Future State; Gotham is turning against Batman, choosing a political leader who is hostile towards the Bat-Family, and there are even hints of a shadowy force manipulating the city given the involvement of the Mirror. Batman has no idea who the Mirror really is, or what his agenda may be; he claims that he’ll destroy his own mask when Batman has been thrown out of Gotham.

The Scarecrow Appears To Have Prospered In DC’s Future State

A recent preview for Future State: Harley Quinn #1 may have dropped an important clue. It sees Harley Quinn successfully captured by the Magistrate, and she’s taken to one of their top psychiatrists for help. There’s a certain degree of irony in all this, given Harley herself used to work at Arkham Asylum, and now she finds herself being counseled by Dr. Jonathan Crane. “We met before in my previous life,” Crane tells Harley with a sinister smile, and readers will immediately know where; Jonathan Crane is the alias of classic Batman villain Scarecrow. It seems the Scarecrow has prospered under the Magistrate, becoming one of their key assets.

All this raises the intriguing possibility Gotham’s Future State troubles have actually been orchestrated by the Scarecrow. Crane has always considered himself a master of fear, and although he’s previously focused on the use of chemicals to induce a state of terror, there’s no reason he should limit himself to that. It’s even possible he is the man behind the Mirror’s mask; that would explain the Mirror’s manipulative words, and his focus on pop psychology. The Mirror claimed he would unmask when his victory was complete and the Bats were outlawed, meaning you’d expect to be seeing an unmasked Mirror allied with the Magistrate.

If this is the case, it’s important to remember Scarecrow is simply one of the Magistrate’s assets, rather than being the power behind the throne. Jonathan Crane is terrifying but limited in his vision, and it’s doubtful he would ever come up with the idea of manipulating an entire city against Batman in this way. Even if he did, he’s also egotistical, so his plan would naturally culminate with himself at the top. No, the plan is clearly somebody else’s, with Scarecrow brought into play against the Dark Knight and doing somebody else’s bidding. In Future State: Harley Quinn #1, we are presumably seeing the reward Crane is given for doing his job well.

What Scarecrow’s Role Would Mean For The Batman Books After Future State

DC’s Future State will last just two months, but the publisher insists it will have a lasting impact on their comics. When the normal line resumes, it’s safe to assume the Batman books will continue telling the story of just how this dystopian (even for Gotham) future came to pass. Armed with advanced knowledge of events, readers will be able to see and interpret clues Batman is ignorant of. That’s an exciting idea because no doubt it will lead to intense debate over whether or not Batman could have seen these clues and averted the tragedy. Of course, the interesting question is whether – most likely – he will actually manage to change the course of events; whether he will in fact spot enough of the clues and prevent this future.

DC’s Future State initiative really is one of the most exciting ideas in DC’s venerable history. It can only really be compared to Marvel’s famous Age of Apocalypse event, in which Marvel replaced the entire X-Men line with books set in an alternate timeline. But DC has gone even further, and the impact of Future State on readers is sure to be felt for years to come.
