DC Universe Will Be Free For One Day Only To Honor Batman’s 80th Birthday

DC Universe will be honoring the 80th birthday of Batman by making all of its content available to non-subscribers for a single day. The digital streaming service will also offer a special reduced rate for new subscribers as part of the event.

First released in September 2018 as part of DC Comics’ annual Batman Day event, DC Universe is unlike any other digital service in existence. While DC Universe offers streaming television series and movies like Netflix and Hulu, DC Universe also offers access to an exclusive online archive of graphic novels and comic books. This makes the service an incredible bargain for comic readers, who can read hundreds of books for the cost of only two print comics per month. Another selling point of the service is DC Universe’s exclusive content, which thus far includes the critically acclaimed original live-action series Titans and Doom Patrol, as well as the long-awaited revival of the animated series Young Justice.

In a recent press release, DC Universe announced that it will make all of its content available for 24 hours, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27. From Midnight EST on Saturday, March 30, to 11:59 PM EST, anyone in the United States will be able to access DC Universe for free through the service’s website or by downloading its associated app. Sadly, this offer does not apply to internet users outside the United States, as DC Universe has yet to become legally available outside of the USA and associated territories.

DC Universe is also offering an incentive to potential subscribers who like what they see based on the free preview. From 12:01 AM EST on Friday, March 29, through 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, April 4, anyone who signs up for a DC Universe subscription will get their first month for only $ 0.80. After that, the service will revert to its standard $7.99 per month rate, though new subscribers may be able to renew at the reduced annual rate of $74.99 per year.

Given what DC Universe has planned in the months to come, it would be to the benefit of newcomers to get signed on now at the cheaper rate. In addition to the second half of Young Justice season 3 in June, the service will be releasing a new live-action Swamp Thing series in May and a live-action Stargirl show in August. DC Universe will also be releasing its first original animated series, Harley Quinn, in October 2019. That’s a lot to look forward to beyond a Saturday spent bingeing Batman movies and the digital remastered Batman: The Animated Series.
