Here’s what you need to know about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s upcoming movies and TV shows. In June 2021, the Hamilton creator released In the Heights, an adaptation of his stage collaboration with Quiara Alegría Hudes. Soon, the multi-hyphenate Miranda will not only premiere his feature directorial debut but will also star in and produce in several high-profile movies.
After experiencing global success with Hamilton, Miranda received criticism after In the Heights released in theatres and on HBO Max. The film earned a modest box office return during its opening weekend and prompted cultural debates about the lack of Afro-Latina representation. Miranda apologized after processing the feedback, stating that “I’m truly sorry. I’m learning from the feedback, I thank you for raising it, and I’m listening.”
As Miranda looks to the future, he can feel confident about large-scale productions that celebrate diversity and various cultures. Not only does he have multiple projects that will release on Netflix in 2021, but also multiple Disney movies that feature his voice and original lyrics. Here’s a full rundown of every upcoming movie and TV show.
Vivo
Miranda voices the titular character in the 2021 musical comedy Vivo. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the movie follows a honey bear musician in Cuba who travels to Florida to deliver a message for his owner. Vivo’s screenplay was co-written by Kirk DeMicco and Quiara Alegría Hudes – the latter having written the original In the Heights book – and features supporting voice performances from Zoe Saldana, Brian Tyree Henry, and Gloria Estefan. Vivo will release sometime in 2021 on Netflix.
We The People
The 2021 series We the People includes a voice performance from Miranda. Featuring music from Frozen composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the 10-part 2021 Netflix show provides lessons on U.S. civics through a series of music videos. We the People will release on July 4 and spotlights the talents of H.E.R., Janelle Monáe, Amanda Gorman, Andra Day, Brandi Carlile, Cordae, Bebe Rexha, and Adam Lambert.
Tick, Tick… Boom!
Based on Steven Levenson’s Broadway play, Tick, Tick… Boom! stars Andrew Garfield as a 30-year-old theatre composer who experiences a mid-life crisis. Miranda directed the Netflix movie, which will release sometime in 2021 and have a theatrical run. Tick, Tick… Boom! co-stars Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton), Judith Light (Transparent), and Joanna Adler (Orange Is the New Black, American Crime Story).
Encanto
The 2021 Disney movie Encanto features eight original songs by Miranda. Starring In The Heights actress Stephanie Beatriz, the film revolves around a family in Colombia who receives powers from a magical house, with the exception being a young girl named Mirabel. When the protagonist learns about a looming threat, she attempts to protect her family’s legacy. Encanto will release on November 24, 2021. The film was directed by Byron Howard, Jared Bush, and Charise Castro Smith.
Neptune Frost
With Neptune Frost, Miranda serves as the executive producer. The science-fiction musical stars Eliane Umuhire as Memory, and explores the relationship between an inter-sex runaway and a miner who become the parents of a “virtual marvel.” Neptune Frost was written and directed by the renowned slam poet Saul Williams, in collaboration with co-director Anisia Uzeyman and co-producer Ezra Miller (the DCEU’s Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash).
The Little Mermaid
For Disney’s upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid, Miranda co-produces and co-wrote four songs with composer Alan Menken. The live-action update of the original 1989 movie will be directed by Rob Marshall, with musician Halle Bailey starring as Ariel. The Little Mermaid cast includes Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Jacob Tremblay (Room), Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), and Deveed Diggs (Hamilton).
The Kingkiller Chronicle
Lin-Manuel Miranda will produce the upcoming film The Kingkiller Chronicle, an adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss’ book series about a musician-adventurer who recalls the events of his life. The movie was written by screenwriter Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser), with the iconic Sam Raimi set to direct. The main cast for The Kingkiller Chronicle hasn’t been announced.
