Warning! Spoilers for Legion of Super-Heroes #12 below! In stores now.

DC Comics’ current Legion of Super-Heroes run has produced a handful of new heroes, with few being more interesting than the Gold Lantern of the future. However, in the latest issue of the series, it was revealed that the Gold Lantern might not be a Lantern at all – in fact, he might be something entirely different.

Kala Lour was introduced as DC’s first Gold Lantern, making his first full appearance in the series sixth issue. The Gold Lantern also wears two separate rings, one Power Ring and one Legion Flight Ring. In Legion of Super-Heroes #12, readers find out that there’s a good reason Kala is the first Gold Lantern ever – as it’s shown his power ring is not a Green Lantern ring at all.

Legion of Super-Heroes #12 by Brian Michael Bendis, Ryan Sook, Wade Von Grawbadger, Jordie Bellaire, and Dave Sharpe, sees the Legion face Rogol Zaar in a battle for new Krypton. After an epic battle between the large group of future heroes and Zaar, Mordru, and the Horraz, which ends with the Gold Lantern helping send Rogol Zaar into the Phantom Zone (the first time it’s been open in over seven hundred years). After the cosmic confrontation, Kala is sent to collect Brainiac on Earth. It’s there he’s informed that he has news about his Lantern ring – it’s not a Green Lantern Ring at all.

Kala is justifiably surprised to learn that his history isn’t tied to the Lanterns, as Brainiac explains that the people who gave him the ring were not Elders of Oa. When the Gold Lantern presses Brainiac on the issue, he’s told there’s a lot more work that needs to be done to reveal where his powers actually come from. In very Brian Michael Bendis fashion, the conversation is interrupted before more details can be revealed.

The revelation is pretty huge, as the fiery Elders of Oa who were shown in the series’ 10th issue that seemed to embrace the entire Emotional Spectrum weren’t what they appeared to be. But who exactly were they, how did they get Kala his own ring, and what is their true goal? The question now remains, where are the real Guardians of Oa? There are a lot more questions than answers coming out of Legion of Super-Heroes #12, but it now can be said the Gold Lantern is not who he was originally thought to be. Hopefully, Bendis and co. give more answers as the series continues.
