DCs Jim Lee Wants To Give Wonder Woman More Villains

DC Publisher Jim Lee (Batman, Wildcats) would love to expand the Wonder Woman mythos, with a particular emphasis on her villains. Speaking at a video Q and A on DC Fandome, the fan-favorite creator stated that Wonder Woman’s rogue’s gallery “could use some expansion.” He went on to say he would also focus on Amazonian technology and history.

During the event, Lee was asked if there were any characters he would like to work on and he pointed out that he’s had multiple runs on Superman and Batman, two-thirds of DC’s “Trinity,” yet never had a run on Wonder Woman, the Trinity’s remaining member. Lee had drawn the character in other books, such as Justice League, but never on her own book. He also expressed interest in working on the Golden Age Earth-2 characters as well as The Legion of Super Heroes.

Lee praised the efforts of previous creators who left their mark on the character, specifically John Byrne and George Perez. Lee singled out Perez, stating his run on the character in the 1980s “set the bar” and credited him for making the character’s mythological elements work in the modern world. He went on to say that he would need to be a paired with an “awesome writer” on the project, and that he would work to expand the character’s mythos. He felt there was plenty to be done in regard to Amazonian technology, as well as their history. But it was Wonder Woman’s rogue’s gallery he expressed the most desire to work with, feeling it lacking and in need of growth. He offered no details on how exactly he would revamp the heroine’s villains.

While Wonder Woman’s villains roster certainly has its heavyweights, such as Cheetah, Circe, Ares and Doctor Psycho, Lee is correct in his assessment that it needs expansion. Both Superman and Batman have deep rosters of villains, and yet Wonder Woman’s doesn’t go far beyond the four mentioned. She is the third part of the Trinity, yet seems to lack the heavy-hitting adversaries of the other members.

Also fascinating is Lee’s desire to explore other aspects of Amazonian culture. He mentioned their history, and while this has been touched on by many creators, Lee and the right writer could make this area shine. His desire to explore Amazonian technology is even more exciting, as this area has rarely been touched. Again, with a great writer to work with, Lee can make this area shine, too – think to his work in Wildcats, and his renderings of technology there. Lee is a dynamic creator, and there is no doubt that he could have a seminal run on the character.
