UPDATE: WATCH the Legends of Tomorrow Trailer!

The CW has found big success in being the foundation of DC Entertainment’s shared TV universe, with Arrow and The Flash both finding mainstream popularity. While shows like Supergirl and Titans try to imitate the DC TV success formula on other networks, The CW is going for a trifecta of hits with Legends of Tomorrow, the new Flash/Arrow spinoff series.

The show will bring together established Flash/Arrrow characters like Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Prof. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heatwave (Dominic Purcell), while mixing in new heroes like Hawgirl (Ciara Renée), Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and perhaps whomever actor Franz Drameh is playing. But one character choice in particular has raised a lot of questions: the return of original Black Canary, Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), who died at the end of the Arrow season 3 premiere. With The CW’s 2015 -2016 TV presentation, we now have more details on Sara Lance’s return.

At the annual CW upfronts, it was confirmed that Arrow actress Caity Lotz would be starring in Legends of Tomorrow as “White Canary” – a possibility we floated back when speculating about Lotz being cast in the show. It was also confirmed that the show would premiere as a midseason replacement (that’s early 2016, as expected), and also follows a format similar to what Marvel TV is doing with Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter.

The name White Canary isn’t just a play on Black Canary from DC Comics lore; White Canary was a minor villain that appeared in the early 2010s, during the “Brightest Day” comic crossover event. She was the only female member of a Chinese martial artist crime family, and fought Black Canary and the Birds of Prey team. Since the character was only a minor villain in DC Comics lore, it seems harmless enough for Legends of Tomorrow to appropriate the name for its own adaptation.

The question now is what is implied by the White Canary name? While presenting his Legends of Tomorrow speculation theories, our own Andrew Dyce had the idea that – based on the events of Arrow season 3 – Sara Lance could be resurrected in the Lazarus pits at Nanda Parbat, home of Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Assassins. [WARNING — Arrow Season 3 Finale SPOILERS Follow.]

With Malcolm Merlin as the new Ra’s, and Nyssa al Ghul now in a (slightly) freer place than she was under her father, it’s not inconceivable that Nyssa would try to bring her lover Sara back from the dead. It would certainly be a fitting metaphor for the White Canary identity switch; resurrection/white color was also a major theme of the “Brightest Day” crossover.

Then again, since Legends of Tomorrow is all about time traveler Rip Hunter assembling a team of heroes to prevent cataclysmic threats, White Canary could simply be explained away as a version of Sara Lance from a different timeline (possibly with powers?). Her costume in the promo image is the most telling; it recalls the “Future Rogue” look Anna Paquin wore for her deleted scenes in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In other words: it looks like it could be the outfit of a futuristic or alt-world Sara Lance, more than it does a Nanda Parbat resurrection shroud.

We expect more info on the matter soon (likely during CW upfronts) – [UPDATE]: Buzzfeed editor Jarett Wieselman has confirmed that Sara’s resurrection IS from the Lazarus pits!

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?
