DCs Most Badass Universe Was Just Created By Lobo

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Dark Nights: Death Metal Infinite Hours Exxxtreme! #1

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s massive Dark Nights: Death Metal event was only going to get more insane and wild with the arrival of Lobo. The Main Man himself wastes no time in upping the extreme factor after being hired by Lex Luthor to find a very important object. However, perhaps Luthor should have hired someone else, seeing as how Lobo just created an entire universe full of different versions of himself in Dark Nights: Death Metal Infinite Hours Exxxtreme! #1.

The issue itself comes from a whole team of writers and artists – such as Frank Tieri, Becky Cloonan, Dale Eaglesham and more – and sees the Main Man meeting his Dark Batman counterpart, The Batman Who Frags, a Batman who injected himself with Czarnian DNA to become even more powerful. While the two begin a classic bar fight (which the original Lobo starts to lose), the Main Man is teleported away by Lex Luthor, who needs him for a job. Luthor needs Lobo to find death metal itself, revealed to be an actual powerful object that could potentially be the key to saving the dying multiverse from The Darkest Knight. Having been promised a sizable pay, Lobo sets out to find the coveted metal. However, once it’s in his hands, things go completely out of whack.

Once Lobo obtains the death metal, the entire universe and laws of reality begin to shift and reform at his will. Fans are taken on an insane ride through the origins of the DC’s Trinity (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman). Each origin has been transformed into a Lobo-tomized version, depicted in the spectacularly irreverent fashion that fans have come to love and expect from the Main Man. Lobo quickly realizes the power he has in his hands, which isn’t a good thing.

Before things can get too crazy (and more than likely X-Rated), Brainiac arrives on Luthor’s behalf to convince Lobo to give up the death metal in order save everything. Initially, Lobo is having way too much fun building his new universe he’s decided to call “Lobo-Land” and naturally doesn’t want to give it up. However, The Batman Who Frags arrives to kill the Main Man, which motivates Lobo to trap the Batman/Lobo remix in his pocket universe, before ultimately destroying them both. He then agrees to help Brainiac and gives up the death metal, realizing that it may be his only way to survive what’s coming as Death Metal nears its end.

Lobo-Land is a wild concept, and one that would certainly be worthy of future exploration on DC Comics’ part. The possibilities for hilarious Lobo-themed Elseworlds stories are endless. In any case, a universe full of Lobos was apparently just too extreme for the DC Universe to handle. Perhaps there’s only enough room for one Main Man in the long term, and he may prove to be the key to saving the multiverse. Fans will just have to wait and see what’s next for Dark Nights: Death Metal and Lobo going forward.
