Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 by DC Comics below
DC Comics has confirmed that Jon Kent’s Superman is bisexual, as an upcoming story in his ongoing series Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 will see the hero officially come out. DC revealed that what some fans have suspected for a long time, that Jon is queer. A future storyline teases a romance with his new friend Jay Nakamura, which is the first queer romance for DC’s newest Superman.
Jon Kent became DC’s newest Superman after his father Clark Kent left Earth in order to stop Mongul and free a group of enslaved people on Warworld. In his absence, he passed the torch onto Jon – who has shown he’s the right man for the job since officially getting the mantle. During his adventures, he’s developed a friendship with a reporter named Jay, which will blossom into a full-blown romance in the upcoming issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El #5.
DC Comics revealed that Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 will take the hero in a bold new direction, as he will officially be confirmed as bisexual in the pages of the story by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Dave Sharpe. For those reading the series, his friendship with Jay Nakamura has played a key part in the hero’s adventures as Superman. Nakamura is a reporter for ‘The Truth,’ which is a social media live-stream news organization featuring stories (from the masked reporter) exposing some of the most underreported, important stories across the world. Superman has taken a keen interest in The Truth, which has brought him closer to Jay. The romance seems like a natural evolution of their relationship. Superman: Son of Kal-El will feature three covers from Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain, and Inhyuk Lee (seen below).
Taylor said in a press release that he’s grateful DC Comics and Warner Bros shared a similar mindset about everyone needing to see heroes and representation in comics, adding “Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.” Meanwhile, Jim Lee, Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee said he couldn’t be prouder of Taylor and Timm’s story, saying that DC’s Multiverse allows for all different types of storytelling, calling the news “another incredible example” of the storytelling medium.
Between Tim Drake being confirmed as bisexual in the recent Batman: Urban Legends story, and now Jon Kent’s own sexuality being further explored, DC Comics is continuing to make their world as inclusive and diverse as the real world itself. While there’s still plenty of work to go, making DC’s new Superman canonically bisexual is an incredibly important moment in comic book history. Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 comes to comic book stores on November 9th.
