Deadly Premonition 2 Has Received a (Very Necessary) Patch

The latest release from director Hidetaka Suehiro, Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise, released its first patch last week. Suehiro, better known as Swery, released a statement on Twitter describing some of the improvements introduced in this patch.

The newly released patch took the first steps in addressing some technical issues such as a low frame rate, though Swery says that this was only a partial fix and that the frame rate will be gradually improved with additional patches. The most important fix, however, addressed how Deadly Premonition 2 treated its transgender character, Lena Dauman.

During the part of the game where the user plays as Francis York Morgan, Lena was repeatedly misgendered and deadnamed, the dialogue making use of her name prior to her transition. Deadnaming, aside from being disrespectful and actively harmful, creates a toxic environment that dismisses and rejects the lived experiences of transgender people. This treatment of Lena, especially alongside York’s in-game speech about accepting marginalized groups intended to include the transgender community, rightly drew sharp criticism.

Swery released an apology on Twitter, saying that he “might have hurt” transgender people through the language of his game. He took full responsibility as the one who wrote this scenario but claimed that any pain his misgendering and deadnaming caused was unintentional.

Deadly Premonition 2’s first patch was released primarily to fix this transphobic language. The result is clunky; York’s original dialogue is removed and edited, but the changes are no longer voice acted. Additionally, only York’s lines seem to be changed, removing a sentence where he deadnames Lena but keeping in her later use of it, now unprompted by York’s actions.

The patch also can’t remove the problematic transphobic content built into the game’s story. Lena’s tragic backstory recreates the “trans tribulation” trope, where transgender characters (and especially trans women) are reduced to or explained by trauma in their past. In the case of Deadly Premonition 2, an incestuous encounter between Lena and her sister is referenced as a traumatic event that led to her realizing she was transgender. Portraying trans characters as sexual deviants also perpetuates wrong and harmful stereotypes of transgender people. A full patch of the transphobic content in Deadly Premonition 2 would need to address more than just the language wielded against Lena.

This initial patch to Deadly Premonition 2’s mistreatment of its transgender character was a necessary first step but fails to absolve the game of its missteps. While Swery is confident that he was able to keep the essence of his game and avoid changing the “important point of the story,” it seems as if some of the story still needs to change.
