Death Note Season 2 Updates Will The Cult Anime Ever Return

It’s been over a decade since cult anime Death Note aired, but will fans ever get to see a second season? Based on Tsugumi Ohba’s manga series, Death Note originally aired in 2006 and 2007 and was helmed by Attack On Titan director Tetsuro Araki. The anime tells the tale of Light Yagami, a high-school student who comes into possession of a mysterious notebook (the titular Death Note) which has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. As Light goes on a vigilante killing spree to rid the world of those he deems morally unworthy, he is corrupted by the Death Note’s power and enters a game of cat-and-mouse with the enigmatic L – a detective tasked with investigating the deaths of those Light has killed.

The Death Note anime is by no means the only adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba’s manga. The same year the anime started airing in Japan, a live-action film was released starring Tatsuya Fujiwara of Battle Royale fame as Light Yagami and Kenichi Matsuyama – who voiced Gelus in the anime) – as L. Since then, there’s also been a live-action TV series, a controversial Netflix Death Note adaptation and even a musical.

Yet, despite all the many adaptations out there (and some of those having multiple sequels), Death Note season 2 still hasn’t happened over 13 years since it originally aired. Can fans of the cult anime ever expect to see a second season of Death Note? Here’s what we know.

Death Note Season 2 Isn’t Likely

Death Note Season 2 Updates Will The Cult Anime Ever Return

Death Note fans will remember the anime ended on a pretty conclusive note with the death of Light Yagami and its 37 episodes covered much of the action from the original manga. Add to that the length of time that’s passed since it aired and the fact there’s been no official word from production company Madhouse regarding a follow-up and it would seem Death Note season 2 isn’t happening.

However, the very last chapter of Tsugumi Ohba’s manga didn’t make it into Death Note and he penned a one-shot special released in 2008 that picked up a few years after Light’s death. A brand-new Death Note one-shot chapter will also be published in Japan’s Jump SQ magazine in February 2020, so there’s a lot of adaptable material out there should Madhouse ever decide to go ahead with a second season.

There Are Other Death Note Sequels

While Death Note fans could be waiting indefinitely for the second season of the anime, other adaptations of the original manga have gotten a sequel or two. In the Japanese live-action film series, the first two movies cover the events of the manga but there’s also a spin-off movie titled L: Change The World, a second direct sequel called Death Note: Light Up The New World and a prequel miniseries named Death Note: New Generation.

Netflix also recently announced its plans for a Death Note sequel but considering how much its first adaptation deviated from the manga, that might not be news that many fans of the anime welcome with open arms.
