Death Stranding Directors Cut Everything New Revealed So Far

In Sony’s most recent State of Play stream, the company revealed a new trailer showing off features of the upcoming Director’s Cut of Death Stranding. Among other things, the Hideo Kojima-directed title is receiving new missions, new items, and much more when it arrives on PS5.

As Hideo Kojima’s first game following his departure from both Konami and Metal Gear Solid’s development team, Death Stranding made major waves upon its release on the PlayStation 4 in 2019. Death Stranding divided critics and fans with its bizarre story and unique survival-walking simulator gameplay, making it a controversial topic upon release. In the wake of Sony’s most recent State of Play stream, however, quite a lot about what Death Stranding: Director’s Cut has to offer has been revealed.

The pre-order trailer Sony revealed during its State of Play showed off a variety of new additions and alterations to the game. Apart from being a remaster supported by the more robust tech with Death Stranding: Director’s Cut on the PS5, the game also brings in a variety of new missions, enemies, tools, and even a new game mode befitting Kojima’s eccentric design philosophies. As for the game’s story, the trailer makes no indication that any of this new content will alter the main narrative of the original release. However, the exact nature of these missions were passed over in equal regard.

Biggest Changes In Death Stranding: Director’s Cut Explained

Sony was incredibly keen on showing off Death Stranding’s gameplay additions, however. The first of which are the new enemies players might encounter in their playthrough. From giant worms with gaping maws to self-dividing squid creatures, it’s clear that Kojima Productions have had a lot on their mind in terms of expanding the game’s combat. This is further evidenced by the inclusion of new weapons and combat mechanics.

Though Death Stranding always had combat, supporters of the game typically appreciated it more for its qualities as an esoteric walking simulator. In general, Death Stranding reviews followed suit and shied away from praising the game’s combat. Even so, the Director’s Cut looks like it will flesh out one of the game’s weaker gameplay elements. An improved melee system has been implemented for Director’s Cut, as well as new weapons like the Maser Gun and Mounted Machine Gun – both of which can now be experimented with in the game’s new firing range.

The real star of the show, however, may be the new delivery support items, as well as the new game mode. Players can now launch packages far distances with the cargo cannon, carry more weight in Death Stranding with the support skeleton and buddy bot (which doubles as a groovy ride), and leap over gaps in vehicles using the new jump ramp. This vehicular affectation does not stop, however, since there’s also the addition of the “Fragile Circuit,” a racing game mode where players can customize their vehicles and set new times (likely for online leaderboards). It’s such an odd addition to a game about being a delivery man, yet it’s also par-for-the-course when it comes to Kojima. Either way, there’s a lot in store for Death Stranding fans when the Director’s Cut releases September 24th.
