Delayed Fox Movies Disney Didn’t Give New Release Dates

Disney shook up its entire 2020 movie calendar due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but left a few delayed 2oth Century Fox films without new release dates. Hollywood has been severely affected by the current COVID-19 crisis, with several studios delaying movies because of coronavirus, either pushing them back to later dates or just pulling them until further notice entirely. The live-action remake of Mulan was the first Disney movie to get pushed back, though a new release date wasn’t initially set. The film was poised to originally open in April but the rapid spreading of coronavirus forced Disney’s hand. The New Mutants quickly followed, being pushed back for the fourth time. Similarly, no new release date was given to it at that point.

As Summer blockbusters started to disappear one at a time, Black Widow stuck firmly to its May spot. But it wasn’t to last and is now expected to open in November. As well as a new release date for that, Disney announced plans to alter their entire upcoming slate. This included delaying the majority of Phase 4 MCU films, as well as revealing that Artemis Fowl will be going straight to Disney+ and revealing new dates for their other tentpole films expected to open over the coming years, including those already delayed, like Mulan. Some films, like Soul, stayed while others were left with their future still uncertain.

It wasn’t just Disney movies that changed, but those inherited from Fox too. While some were re-dated in the schedule, like Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy, others have been left out for now. Considering Disney is juggling with a myriad of films during this unprecedented time, it’s expected that they’d choose to focus on setting the films they produced themselves up with new release dates first. Here’s every Fox movie Disney hasn’t given a new release date to.

THE NEW MUTANTS

Delayed Fox Movies Disney Didn’t Give New Release Dates

Josh Boone’s superhero horror film, The New Mutants is seemingly cursed. The film was initially supposed to release on April 13th, 2018; it even received its first trailer towards the end of 2017 in the hopes of making this date. It was then moved to February 2019 and then again to August when X-Men: Dark Phoenix was prioritized. It was shifted again as a result of the Fox acquisition, finally being given a release date of April 3rd, 2020 by Disney. A second New Mutants trailer was released in January and things started to look promising for the long-delayed X-Men spin-off.

However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Disney has had to delay New Mutants’ April release date, and another one is still to be determined. What will happen with The New Mutants remains to be seen; though, with Artemis Fowl skipping theatrical entirely and debuting exclusively on Disney+, it’s possible this could eventually land on a streaming service, even if Disney has resisted that option so far. Considering it has had such bad luck up until this point, maybe that’s the best route for it. At this point, fans just want to see the film in case it gets shelved entirely.

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

Armando Iannucci’s latest project, The Personal History of David Copperfield, has opened in some territories already – it released in the UK back in January. Its Stateside release date was slated for May 8th, 2020 and good word of mouth plus a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score indicated it was going to be yet another triumph from the acclaimed Scottish filmmaker. Dev Patel stars in the titular role and The Personal History of David Copperfield looked like an upbeat, quirky family film from its exuberant first trailer. The adaptation of Charles Dickens’ class novel was planned to release as counter-programming to Disney’s Black Widow. Sadly, it now sits without a release date. The film is much smaller than most of Disney’s fare so it has the potential to work alongside one of their many blockbusters. Disney shouldn’t have too much trouble situating The Personal History of David Copperfield amidst its calendar given its family-friendly appeal and British charm. It’s the kind of film that could have potential Awards attention, so a release towards the end of 2020 could be likely.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW

Much like David Copperfield, Joe Wright’s The Woman in the Window was initially a May release too – scheduled for May 14th, 2020. Also like David Copperfield, the project seems like it has the potential to be an Awards contender, especially as it has a stellar ensemble cast led by Amy Adams. It was the final film made under the Fox banner so its significance is not to be undermined in this regard. Adapting A.J Finn’s novel of the same name, The Woman in the Window tells the story of a reclusive woman who finds her idyllic life going awry when she sees something across the road she shouldn’t have. The film was supposed to arrive last year but re-shoots meant that it was delayed to May. With that release date now pulled, it’s uncertain when it may open. Finn doesn’t have the appeal of Charles Dickens or an X-Men property, but a Hitchcockian thriller led by one of the most prominent actresses working today sounds like something Disney won’t want to hold for too long. Hopefully a new date is revealed soon.

ANTLERS

Scott Cooper’s horror film, Antlers, was looking at an April 17th, 2020 release date before the House of Mouse decided to reconsider. Most horror films have less to lose given their smaller budgets; Antlers looks like the kind of film that can easily make its money back, especially considering it’s produced by Guillermo del Toro, so has his name attached too. Antlers is a monster movie about a young boy that comes in contact with a creature that wreaks havoc on his life. Little is known about Antlers, though it looks like a must-watch for all horror fans. Plus, Cooper’s filmography is great and del Toro last produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark which proved to be an effective horror. This seems like the kind of film that could benefit from an October/November release date, around Halloween. As of right now, no new release date has been set by Disney though.
