SPOILERS FOR DEMON SLAYER’S MUGEN TRAIN ARC FOLLOW:

Ufotable, the animation studio behind both seasons of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba TV anime and the 2020 Mugen Train movie, released a short video of the Flame Hashira showing off his fiery powers, as well as new art featuring a younger version of the character. The art also shows several members of his family, including his mother, Ruka, his younger brother, Senjuro, and his father, the retired Hashira Shinjuro Rengoku, who is shown gifting his eldest son a training sword. The art was released on May 10, which is Rengoku’s canonical birthday.

Rengoku was first introduced in the manga in Chapter 44, near the end of the Mount Natagumo arc. After being captured by Kanao, series protagonist Tanjiro Kamado and his younger sister Nezuko are brought before the Hashira, the most powerful warriors within the Demon Slayer Corps. While Rengoku immediately displays his enthusiastic and cheerful personality, he also joins most of the other Hashira in agreeing that the Kamado siblings should be executed. Nevertheless, he eventually grows close to Tanjiro during the events of the Mugen Train arc, where he ultimately loses his life during the climactic battle with the Upper Rank demon Akaza, in what many fans regard as one of the best fights in the entire series. Despite dying relatively early in the story, the character’s boisterous personality and incredible fighting abilities have allowed him to remain one of Demon Slayer’s most popular characters.

Demon Slayer wrapped up its second season earlier this year, which was mostly comprised of an adaptation of the Entertainment District arc. The season was lauded by critics and fans alike for its emotional storytelling and for studio Ufotable’s feature-quality animation and fight choreography. A third season, which will be based around the Swordsmith Village arc, is currently in production. That season will concentrate on two of the other Hashiras: the bubbly Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji, and the young Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito.

The popular Shonen Jump manga series was created by Koyoharu Gotouge in 2016. Despite publishing its final chapter in 2020, Demon Slayer was still one of the most popular manga of 2021, managing to sell an impressive 29 million copies in Japan within the year. The series has managed to sell over 150 million copies worldwide, making it the newest series to join the list of the top ten best-selling manga of all time.

Both seasons of the Demon Slayer anime are available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
