As much as Destiny 2: Beyond Light is a big expansion, it is nowhere near as massive as Forsaken once was – and likely none of the future expansions will ever be. Still, the anticipated update is expected to introduce a reasonable amount of new content for players to stay engaged.
The latest launch trailer for Destiny 2: Beyond Light sets the mood for the upcoming expansion that will put Guardians right into the heart of a furious battle between the Light and the Dark. But as much as players are excited for a massive batch of new story content, there’re also quality-of-life features and improvements they should look forward to. For instance, as revealed by Bungie, gamers won’t have to keep old items for the sole purpose of using in a transmogrification system anymore. With Beyond Light, all the style variants will automatically be added into the system from all the gear pieces ever stored on players’ accounts, which will ultimately allow clearing those overstuffed vaults.
During a recent livestream on the Twitch Gaming channel, Destiny 2 director Luke Smith addressed the size of the upcoming Beyond Light expansion confirming that it’s not as big as Forsaken, although it is effectively the second-largest update for the game. While Beyond Light introduces brand new locations on Jupiter’s moon Europa, Forsaken was richer in both extensive story content and revolutionary gameplay features. The reason, according to Smith, is plain simple – as an independent studio, Bungie is now limited by its budget whereas the development of Forsaken was comprehensively supported by Activision, which allowed the expansion to be that massive and innovative. Unfortunately, the team does not possess enough development resources to have both huge updates and regular seasonal activities. As a result, it’s highly unlikely that Bungie will ever be able to develop an expansion similar to Forsaken in size and ambitiousness.
With Beyond Light, Bungie is trying to connect the sequel to the original game more by finally introducing the long-awaited destination that is Europa. Jupiter’s moon was initially teased a long time ago with concept art for Destiny, and with the newest expansion, players will finally have the opportunity to explore the mysterious birthplace of the Exo race. It lines perfectly with the reintroduction of Exo Stranger, Guardians’ mentor from the original game, whose reappearance will mark their first appearance first time since the original Destiny.
While it might sound slightly depressing that Destiny 2 players won’t ever receive another huge portion of content comparable to Forsaken, it is still a remarkable achievement that Bungie managed to develop the second-largest expansion without the seemingly infinite resources of Activision. It clearly demonstrates just how much can be delivered through the sheer passion and devotion of an independent studio that values its creative freedom and pushes to the limit to satisfy the community.
