While several notable actors appeared as serial killers in the hit Showtime series Dexter, one surprising Marvel Cinematic Universe actor was actually the first choice to play season 1’s Ice Truck Killer. When Dexter premiered in 2006, the series stood out for its unconventional antihero premise, with protagonist Dexter Morgan working as a blood-spatter analyst while moonlighting as a vigilante serial killer. Most popular crime shows at the time focused on the police tracking down the killers, with Dexter flipping the traditional dynamic and presenting the series from the killer’s point of view.
The Ice Truck Killer was Dexter’s inaugural season villain, who helped Dexter unearth many of his repressed and traumatic childhood experiences. Dexter’s Ice Truck Killer is revealed to be Rudy Cooper, a doctor specializing in prosthetics who begins a romantic relationship with Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan. In the season 1 finale twist, “Rudy” is actually confirmed to be Brian Moser, Dexter’s biological brother. Brian had been subject to the same traumas as Dexter during childhood, also becoming a serial killer and taunting Dexter into revealing his own tortured identity. Once Dexter finally discovers Rudy’s identity and his treatment of Deb, Dexter kills Brian and frames it as a suicide.
Before casting House of Cards actor Christian Camargo as the Ice Truck Killer, Dexter’s executive producer and director, Michael Cuesta, advocated for MCU actor Jeremy Renner to play the part. Renner revealed in an interview with Cloture Club that Cuesta “needed me to be in Dexter,” suggesting he was the creator’s perfect vision for Dexter’s biological brother. In the years before taking on the role of Clint Barton/Hawkeye for The Avengers movies, Renner was better known for his dark, brooding character acting. However, despite the showrunners’ enthusiasm, Renner ultimately turned down the Ice Truck Killer role.
The reason Renner was the frontrunner for the Ice Truck Killer was his riveting performance as notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 biopic Dahmer. Cuesta described Renner’s Dahmer performance with enthusiasm, telling Cloture Club, “I was blown away with him.” After talking more with Cuesta, Renner said he wasn’t interested in doing any more serial killer-based television series or movies. Cuesta respected his decision after having just played Dahmer, but ultimately, Renner explained the reason he didn’t play Dexter’s older brother was because of scheduling conflicts with his sci-fi horror movie 28 Weeks Later. Renner’s choice is also unfortunate considering he more closely resembles Michael C. Hall than Camargo.
Despite the exciting prospect of Renner portraying such a maniacal villain, taking on the role of Brian may ultimately have compromised his chances of playing Hawkeye in the MCU. If Renner had continually taken roles as serial killers and villains, it may have conflicted with his ability to play a hero for over a decade in the MCU. Barton’s version of the Ice Truck Killer may have been more memorable in Dexter’s cultural conscience than Camargo, but Renner’s career was likely better off by going with 28 Weeks Later instead.
