Vampire Diaries Why Isobel Killed Herself In Season 2

On The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert’s mother, Isobel Flemming, killed herself during season 2 after being compelled by Klaus Mikaelson. One of the show’s biggest mysteries during season 1 was why Elena looked so much like Katherine Pierce (The Petrova doppelganger storyline was introduced during season 2). The striking resemblance between Stefan’s vampire ex and the small-town girl was what drew Stefan to Elena in the first place. Stefan discovered the truth about Elena: Miranda and Grayson Gilbert weren’t her biological parents.

Elena’s search for her birth mother led her to Isobel, who Damon Salvatore turned into a vampire years earlier. Isobel first appeared during season 1, episode 21, “Isobel.”Despite Isobel’s insistence that human life meant nothing to her, John Gilbert later revealed that she was working with him to kill the tomb vampires. They also targeted the Salvatore brother because they feared Elena’s romantic attachment to Damon and Stefan fearful put her in danger. Isobel returned to Mystic Falls during season 2, episode 17, “Know Thy Enemy.” The purpose of her visit was to help Klaus execute his plan to remove the curse Esther placed on him.

Isobel took Elena to a cemetery to show her the headstone Isobel’s parents had made in memory of their daughter. The headstone symbolized her life as a human: the part of her that one day hoped to know her daughter. Instead, Elena met the woman who would betray her flesh and blood. Isobel received a call from one of Klaus’ witches telling her she’d completed everything Klaus compelled her to do. She apologized to Elena, and in a shocking twist, Isobel removed her daylight necklace and burned to death. Fans debated whether Isobel took her life by choice or because she was compelled. In an interview with EW, Julie Plec left no doubt that Isobel’s death was a tragic consequence of her association with the Original — one of the strongest vampires ever to exist.

The biggest clue about Isobel’s fate can be found in season 1, episode 15, “A Few Good Men.” Isobel compelled a man to warn Elena to stop looking for her. Once he delivered the message, he said, “Good. I’m done now” and stepped into the path of an oncoming car. When Isobel spoke to Klaus’ witch, she asked if she was done. The connection between the language used by Isobel and the man from the earlier episode was deliberate to indicate the compulsion was now over after the request was fulfilled.

Klaus compelled Isobel to betray Katherine, Alaric, and Elena (who was facing the first of four deaths), but she maintained the free will to apologize and show remorse for her actions. By stating she was done, Isobel was relieved not only that she no longer had any obligation to Klaus, but that she could end her torment living as a vampire. She brought Elena to the cemetery to show there was a side of her that remembered her humanity and mourned the loss of it.

Isobel’s grim fate was a logical conclusion to her story arc. She not only failed to secure her daughter’s safety but effectively sealed Elena’s fate. During season 1 of The Vampire Diaries, Isobel told Alaric she regretted her decision to become a vampire. Isobel’s connections to Alaric and Elena were the only links she had left to her humanity, and because of her actions, those relationships had nowhere to go. Isobel never made another appearance on the show, even though many dead vampires returned over the years. She was also absent from the series finale, during which Elena and Damon reunited with their families.
