The Vampire Diaries kills off many characters multiple times during its eight-season run – including Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert, who dies on four separate occasions. In a fictional world inhabited by a myriad of supernatural creatures, there’s bound to be a high mortality rate. But thanks to tons of mystical loopholes, villains and heroes alike can languish in purgatory, hoping and plotting for a chance to return to the land of the living or find absolution and peace in some kind of afterlife.
After the Salvatore brothers arrive in Mystic Falls, Elena learns her small town is full of creatures usually only found in horror movies. The threat to her very existence is amplified by the fact that she’s a doppelganger – a supernatural byproduct created to restore the natural balance between life and death.
Elena’s efforts to fight evil and protect those closest to her leads to her multiple deaths and resurrections. Here are all of the various ways in which she’s died – and how she came back from almost all of them.
Klaus Drains Elena’s Blood
Klaus Mikaelson and his siblings are turned into vampires by their parents, unleashing the plague of vampirism on the earth. The product of infidelity, Klaus also possesses the werewolf gene, and by turning Klaus into an immortal monster who must kill to survive, Esther and Mikael unleash his inner wolf. Esther suppresses Klaus’ werewolf side with a spell that is bound by the blood of the original Petrova doppelganger, Tatia. To break the curse, Klaus performs a ritual that includes draining Elena’s blood. Elena dies, but a spell linking her life to that of her biological father’s, John Gilbert, enables her to come back as John sacrifices himself in her place.
Elena Drowns
In an attempt to kill her children and eradicate all vampires from existence, Original witch Esther turns Alaric Saltzman into a vampire hunter. To guarantee Alaric doesn’t outlive his usefulness, Esther links his life to Elena’s. After Rebekah witnesses Alaric stab Klaus with the White Oak Stake, she decides the only way to protect herself and what’s left of her family is to kill Elena, who is on her way back to town with Matt. Rebekah stands in the road, and when Matt swerves to miss her, his truck goes off the Wickery Bridge. Trapped underwater, Elena insists Stefan save Matt first. She drowns with Damon’s blood in her system (due to an injury sustained after a fall) and awakens in transition – technically dead, but with the option of feeding and becoming a vampire.
Elena And Damon Die In An Explosion
With the impending obliteration of the Other Side looming during season 5, Elena and her friends must find a way to rescue the ones they love trapped in the supernatural purgatory and extinguish the treat the Travelers pose to spirit magic. The only way to accomplish both tasks involves a massive influx of supernatural souls overwhelming the Anchor and a resurrection spell. This allows the portal between the two worlds to remain open long enough for a few lucky souls to pass through. With the Travelers gathered together at the Mystic Grill clueless about a gas leak, it’s up to Damon and Elena to ignite the spark. The Grill explodes, killing the Travelers and Elena and Damon. Elena escapes the Other Side before it self-destructs.
Elena Dies Of Old Age
On the series finale, Elena writes in her diary that she and Damon live a long and happy life together. The presumption is they both die of old age and reunite with their loved ones after finding peace. This interpretation was confirmed by showrunner Julie Plec, who told The Hollywood Reporter, “You can define it as closure, you can define it as heaven, you can define it as some sort of spiritual otherworld. Whatever it is that you want to define it as, that is what peace means to me – which is that somehow you find yourself at peace because you have everything you ever wanted.”
