Diary of a Wimpy Kid Star Explains His Sincere Take on Greg Heffley

In December, Disney+ released an animated film adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The film follows the life of middle-schooler Greg Heffley as he chronicles it in his journal. The Wimpy Kid book series has sold over 250 million volumes worldwide across 16 books and has been adapted into several live-action films. The Disney+ adaptation of the first novel marks the first time the story has ever been fully animated and looks to kick off off a film series for the Wimpy Kid franchise.

However, what’s most notable about the new film are the stellar performances of its voice cast. Wimpy Kid’s voice actors bring plenty of heart and even more realism to their deliveries, forming the anchor of an already fairly grounded kids’ movie. In a press conference attended by CBR and other outlets, Brady Noon (The Might Ducks: Game Changers), the voice of Greg Heffley, explained the approach he took to deliver the best Greg he could.

“[This] was the first voiceover work I’ve ever done except for ADR work for live-actions,” Heffley said. “I tried to act out most of the scenes like it was live-action. I pretended like there was a camera in front of me to get that realness and that sincerity in my voice… If I had to run during the woods scene, I was running in place, or if I had to jump, I’d jump. If I’m in an emotional scene, I’d just really put myself in the shoes of Greg and how I would react.”

Noon’s voice acting method paid off in spades in the finished film. He explained further, “Sometimes I’d just really pretend I was Greg. Like, ‘This is me, this is my life. My friend Rowley’s kind of a dork, but I love him to death.’ I took it scene by scene, and put my own spin on it and how I would feel if Rowley said [something like], ‘You want to come over and play?’ How I would react to that? I had to put my own spin on Greg but, at the same time, really hit that nostalgic Greg from the books.”

The Disney+ film also marks series creator Jeff Kinney’s first time screenwriting, as he penned the script for the movie. Though both tackled their roles separately, it turned out that Kinney’s approach to screenwriting perfectly complemented Noon’s approach to voice acting.

“I think what is so interesting is that when I wrote the screenplay, I was really writing for live actors because I didn’t know how to do anything else,” Kinney shared. “I wasn’t writing for cartoon characters. When Brady stepped into the shoes of Greg Heffley and, of course, Ethan [William Childress] stepped into the shoes of Rowley, they felt like really fully fleshed-out characters. They felt like characters that you could really care for. That’s so important.”

Kinney continued, “I think what I really like about the choices that we made is that we started off with this cartoony style for the backgrounds and everything that played in the cartoon world, and [then] we eased into something that was more realistic because we wanted it to feel really grounded. But what really makes it feel grounded are the performances — and we got such great actors in each role.”
