For Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad’s marketing, John Cena channeled his WWE days to make sure people instantly recognized the character’s attire on sight.

In an interview with People, Cena explained his main reason for wearing the costume during interviews was to get viewers asking questions. “With The Suicide Squad, there were so many characters and so many personalities. I just wanted to try to familiarize the audience with my little piece, pun intended,” he explained. “It’s very similar to the approach that I use with the WWE when I was performing full-time there. I would be in all interviews in the John Cena outfit of a ball cap, T-shirt, shorts and wristbands. People began to associate that character and become familiar with that character. That’s just the same approach I used in Peacemaker. A lot of people may shy away from that approach because it doesn’t … it’s not indicative of who they genuinely are, and it’s not who I am. That’s Peacemaker. But I wanted the audience to be familiar with Peacemaker.”

Though Cena admitted he’s skeptical about the tactic’s success, he also noted how all existing Peacemaker-related memorabilia leading up to The Suicide Squad’s release meant there was a market for piquing interest. “Man, I remember when we released a teaser at San Diego Comic-Con. There was already Peacemaker cosplay, there was already Peacemaker fan art,” Cena continued. “This is from a character that if you watch The Suicide Squad, isn’t on-screen that much. So I was just trying to get people excited for the movie and certainly when we had the … when James had the idea for the spinoff, I really wanted to go forward to do my part to familiarize people with the character.”

Created in November 1966 For Charlton Comics and later acquired by DC, Peacemaker’s comic uniform was adapted fairly accurately for The Suicide Squad and its HBO Max spinoff. Cena not only repeatedly wore the uniform and helmet during interviews, but even showed up to The Suicide Squad’s premiere in full Peacemaker garb. The Peacemaker show, by comparison, expanded upon details of Peacemaker’s costume like his bizarrely-shaped helmet, revealing that multiple versions of the helmet were created by his bigoted father Auggie, each with their own distinct superpower.

In addition to featuring the return of the titular character, Peacemaker introduced a few other costumed DC characters like Judomaster and Vigilante, the latter portrayed as Peacemaker’s sociopathic friend. Vigilante previously appeared on Arrow Seasons 5 and 6 as a reoccurring foe-turned-antihero, though his comic identity — Adrian Chase — was later revealed as the cover for Season 5’s main antagonist Prometheus.

Peacemaker Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max.
