Did Sonic The Hedgehog Just Rip Off The Speed Films

Dr. Eggman might not have implanted a bomb in Sonic The Hedgehog that will explode if his speed drops below 50 mph, which coincidentally does happen to a bus in the first Speed film, but Sonic is infected with a virus that momentarily stops spreading and even goes into a brief remission when he’s running at top speeds for long periods of time. Failure to travel at such high velocities will lead to the blue hedgehog transforming into a metallic zombie or, as he calls it, Zombot.

Created by Dr. Eggman, the so-called Metal Virus first appears as a metallic splotch in the area where the fauna or flora comes into contact with the infection and slowly metastasizes until the entire organic being is covered. Continual contact with those who are infected will expedite the spread. Meanwhile, the aptly named 1994 action thriller Speed revolves around a bus getting implanted with a bomb that arms the moment the vehicle reaches 50 mph and will explode if the speedometer drops below that threshold. Did IDW’s Sonic just rip off the first Speed film?

The obvious difference between the two is that a living, breathing creature is infected with a virus that will transform him into a zombie while a nonorganic, non-sentient object is rigged with a bomb that will explode. Unlike buses, Sonic isn’t a mode of transportation (though, as a hero, he has carried characters before in his arms). But a major variable in each situation involves velocity where a reduction in speed will lead to adverse consequences. Sure, Sonic can run slower than 50 mph if he so desires without immediately becoming a Zombie nor is there any magic number he must maintain, but both Sonic and the bus do not possess the ability to move indefinitely (Sonic will eventually get tired and pass out and the bus will eventually run out of gas).

This unfortunate predicament forces Sonic to run so frequently that he’s even gotten tired on more than one occasion. At one point, Sonic quips that this must be what everyone feels like when they’re running. Later, the success of a particular mission is wholly contingent on Sonic running on a treadmill rather than him being allowed to run anywhere and everywhere or to perform cool attacks with Amy the Hedgehog.

Both of these speed-inflicted things must literally and figuratively maneuver various obstacles while forced to travel at high velocities. For example, the bus in Speed can’t crash into objects or make quick turns without fear of dropping below the 50 mph threshold. What makes matters worse, the film takes place in Los Angeles, and as a highly congested city, maintaining 50 mph is not a simple task, a complication that is compounded by the fact that, at some point, the bus will have to slow down to receive fuel. Meanwhile, Sonic has to watch out where he runs because if he comes into contact with a healthy entity, then he risks infecting them. So running through crowds is a no-go. These events that eventually transpire are so intense that Sonic loses his mind momentarily. As for the Speed sequel? No, Sonic The Hedgehog thankfully did not rip off that boat wreck of a film.
