Director Paul Thomas Anderson Defends Superhero Movies & SpiderMan

Director Paul Thomas Anderson defends superhero movies and says Spider-Man: No Way Home will bring audiences back to theaters. After earning critical acclaim in 1997 with his coming-of-age drama Boogie Nights, Anderson now enjoys a reputation as one of the most lauded filmmakers working today. The incomparable auteur is behind various Academy Award recognized movies like Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice. One of Anderson’s most recent films, 2017’s Phantom Thread, was Daniel Day-Lewis’ final performance before he shockingly retired from acting that same year.

Now, Anderson has been making the rounds promoting his new movie, Licorice Pizza, which debuted in select theaters on November 26 and is gearing up for its wide release on Christmas Day. The film returns to a common setting for the director’s work, Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, where child actor Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) grows up and develops his first love, a much older photographer’s assistant, Alana Kane (Alana Haim). Licorice Pizza just scored four Golden Globe nominations including nods for its two lead stars and one for Best Musical or Comedy.

In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Anderson was asked how he has fared making mid-budget movies for adults in a landscape dominated by big-budget blockbusters. Anderson says he feels “happier than ever” he’s been able to carve out his own niche, while also defending superhero movies against some of the recent criticism they’ve received, saying everyone should be happy this week’s Spider-Man: No Way Home will usher audiences back into movie theaters. Obviously it’s gotten even more complicated with streaming and the sort of overabundance of superhero movies. Most of the stuff I don’t take too seriously. I mean, it seems that there is a bit of a preoccupation with superhero films. I like them. It seems to be something that’s popular these days to sort of wonder if they’ve ruined movies and all this kind of stuff. I just don’t feel that way. I mean, look, we’re all nervous about people getting back to the theater, but you know what’s going to get them back in movie theaters? Spider-Man. So let’s be happy about that.

Anderson is just the latest high-profile director to share his opinion on superhero blockbusters dominating the box office landscape and the cinematic validity of Marvel and DC movies, though his comments are in stark contrast to others who have spoken up. Martin Scorsese famously compared Marvel movies to theme parks while more recently, Dune director Denis Villeneuve criticized them as “cut and paste” and Ridley Scott slammed them as “boring as sh-t.” Instead, Anderson personally enjoys superhero movies and seems optimistic about what they contribute to the industry.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s prediction that Spider-Man: No Way Home will get audiences back into theaters will likely come to fruition when it releases on December 17. The movie’s ticket pre-sales have been the highest since Avengers: Endgame. Marvel’s Black Widow and Shang-Chi performed well given the circumstances, but the industry is laregly still waiting for a blockbuster to see numbers comparable to what they were pre-pandemic.
