The 1990s was a strong decade for Disney animation. After all, the studio produced some of the most iconic animated films of all time during this era, including The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin. While it’s live-action department wasn’t quite as successful, there were a few gems in the bunch. We’re here to look at these films now. We’ll be diving deeper into the ten highest-rated live-action Disney films to be released between 1990 and 1999 by turning to the percentage ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. These scores are based on the good and bad reviews of critics. Those with the highest number of positive reviews in comparison to negative ones will be showing up here.
Before we get started, we’re shouting it out to White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf. While this film qualified for the list with a score of 71%, our space is limited. With the logistics out of the way, it’s time to back up the clock and head to the ’90s. Here are the best films of the decade, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
10 The Santa Clause (1994): 71%
This holiday classic sees toy salesman Scott Calvin taking over the duties of Santa Clause after he falls from the roof one fateful Christmas Eve. Though Calvin believes that he’ll be able to move on with life following the events of the evening, he soon learns that he will be forced to take over Santa’s duties from then on.
The film’s spirited story was packed with an equal mix of drama and humor. Though they never reached the acclaim of the original, The Santa Clause did end up with two sequels.
9 Muppet Treasure Island (1996): 73%
Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island was taken on by Jim Henson’s Muppets in this 1996 musical adventure. Muppet Treasure Island has Jim Hawkins sailing across the sea alongside Great Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat, and other friends after a treasure map falls into his hands.
The hearty story was packed with the kind of energy and fun that left critics entertained.
8 Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken (1991): 73%
Inspired by the story of Sonora Webster Carver, this 1991 drama follows a young woman’s journey to becoming a daredevil horse rider in the 1920s. After her father’s star rider Marie gets injured, Sonora takes her turn at the horse diving platform.
Though the real Carver felt that Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken had strayed too far from the truth, critics loved the mix of peril and heart.
7 The Adventures Of Huck Finn (1993): 73%
Based on the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, this 1993 adventure film has the titular character and an escaped slave, Jim, journeying along the Mississippi River together. While Jim hopes to evade his master, Huck hopes to get away from his abusive father.
This retelling of Huckleberry Finn was commended by critics for featuring strong leads, an engaging story, and compelling themes.
6 Cool Runnings (1993): 74%
Cool Runnings, loosely based on the Jamaican bobsleigh team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics, follows four friends who hope to compete at the games despite never seeing snow. Teaming together with a former champion, the guys set their sites on winning.
Critics loved the film’s light and uplifting tone. The underdog theme was both sweet and inspiring.
5 The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992): 75%
Muppet Treasure Island wasn’t the only time Kermit and the gang took on a classic tale. A few years before in 1992, the Muppets reenacted Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The movie has the stingy, old Ebenezer Scrooge facing the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future one night. This leads him to reconsider what he wants in life and the way he treats others around him.
The Muppet Christmas Carol was stocked with lively songs and charming characters that fans knew and loved.
4 The Jungle Book (1994): 79%
Though you might be more familiar with Disney’s 2016 retelling of The Jungle Book, this wasn’t the first time the film studio created a live-action version of the tale.
Straying from the story of the animated classic, 1994’s The Jungle Book sees Mowgli growing up among the wild animals after his father is killed by a tiger. As he grows older, however, he ends up reuniting with a childhood friend, Kitty, and attempts to reincorporate back into human civilization. He has to watch out for Kitty’s suitor, Capt. Boone, however, who seeks the treasures of the jungle. Critics praised The Jungle Book for being full of dazzling backgrounds, pretty costumes, funny animals, and major fun.
3 The Parent Trap (1998): 86%
In this 1998 remake of the ’60s classic The Parent Trap, Twins Hallie and Annie have never met. However, this all changes when they end up attending the same camp. The two devise a plan to get their divorced parents back together.
A young Lindsay Lohan shined through in the leading role. Combined with an updated setting and a proven formula, the ’90s Parent Trap proved to be a winner.
2 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (87%)
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, based on the novel of the same name by Sheila Burnford, has the pets of a family setting out to locate their owners after they leave for San Francisco. This has them facing the beauty and terror of the California wilderness.
The cross-country animal story was full of delightful adventure. Breezy and simple, Homeward Bound has withstood the test of time.
1 The Straight Story (96%)
Topping off the list is Disney’s The Straight Story. This biographical road drama follows a retired farmer in his 70s who decides to make things right with his dying brother Lyle after hearing that he has suffered from a stroke. Because Alvin has no car, he attempts to make the trip from Iowa to Wisconsin on the back on his lawnmower.
The unique story, gorgeous landscapes, and moving themes had the film garnering praise.
