It’s no question that Walt Disney Pictures have produced some of the most beloved and treasured films of all time, some of them even being nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. These films provide some of the most epic and majestic sequences ever created for the medium.
Thanks to Disney+, viewers now have nearly unlimited access to some of the studio’s greatest work, both live-action and animated, at the click of a button. From fantastical flights of fantasy to grand and glorious adventures, Disney still knows how to redefine the term “epic.” The possibilities are simply endless.
10 Fantasia
Although a bit light on the scale at first, Fantasia was an experiment in the medium of the animated film that proved to be game-changing for Walt Disney. Aided only by music and the imaginations of his team of artists and animators, Walt’s passion project truly showed what could be done with ink and paint.
“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Night on Bald Mountain” are powerful and visual sequences that really touch the audience. Definitely a film ahead of its time.
9 The Black Cauldron
The Black Cauldron doesn’t exactly have the most stellar reputation, but it did have the potential to be Disney’s version of Lord of the Rings. This dark fantasy had everything other films of the genre possessed and more, albeit with a Disney touch.

From gothic castles to enchanted fairy glens, this black sheep of the Disney family could be its own D&D campaign. Decades later, it’s still one of the most under-appreciated epic animated films.
8 Treasure Planet
There was a period in the early 2000s that Disney seemed to be going through a transitional period with its animation and design. Treasure Planet was like something the fans had never seen before. This film is a beautiful mixture of sci-fi and historical fiction.
This retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous swashbuckling tale took viewers from the sea to the stars on the search for treasure. The galaxies and environments the colorful cast of characters and countered were nothing short of inspiring.
7 Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Atlantis: The Lost Empire felt like Disney’s first animated feature made mainly for adults. It was a strange hybrid of Steampunk meets Indiana Jones, and all tied together with an under-appreciated sketchbook art style.
Atlantis itself was like something never seen before. Disney’s world-building was at an all-time high in this movie, creating a brand new world under the waves. Truly an epic movie.
6 Hercules
All mythological films have to have some element of epic scale to them, it’s part of the genre. That being said, Hercules definitely has its own brand of colorful flavor to the grand and glorious Greek myth. Highly Disneyfied but beloved by millions, Disney’s demigod packs more than a powerful punch.
Both realms of gods and mortals are impeccably designed and distinct, Hades’s minions and monsters are all unique and fearsome, and Herc’s heroic feats have a comic-book quality to them that just doesn’t quit. It’s epic, but a bit outside of traditional.
5 Star Wars: The Force Awakens
There are few franchises that capture the word epic as perfectly as Star Wars. Disney’s contribution to the famous space opera might be what divides modern fans, but it still holds true to the narrative.
Disney’s trilogy has everything that made the originals powerful and emotionally interesting. It’s a tale of discovery, betrayal, and of an awakening that changes the course of the galaxy. How is that not the setup for something incredible?
4 Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame
Not since Who Framed Roger Rabbit has the Disney universe scene such an astounding crossover. Granted, Mickey Mouse isn’t going to show up for the battle against Thanos, but watching all of the MCU’s mightiest heroes come together to save the universe never gets old.
Everyone from the Avengers to the Guardians of the Galaxy makes an appearance here and it’s absolutely astounding. This sequence of movies is truly epic.
3 The Chronicles of Narnia
Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien will undoubtedly be familiar with his friend and literary rival, C.S. Lewis, and his Chronicles of Narnia.
From The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe to Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the studio reinvented the beloved fantasy realm in almost equal measure to Jackson’s Middle-Earth. Without exaggeration, it’s easily one of the most incredible live-action series on the service.
2 The Hunchback of Notre Dame
If there was ever a Disney film or ahead of its time, it was the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Alongside its emotional narrative, the size, scope, scale of everything that goes into the film is positively glorious.
The designs and creation of medieval Paris alone is something to behold. Everything is so complex and intricate, the dedication to detail from the artists are both keenly felt with every frame.
1 The Lion King
The Lion King set the bar for what traditionally animated films could do. Regarded as one of the best Disney films of all time, few animated features have imitated the sweeping score, the majestic visuals, and the incredible artistry that went into creating this masterpiece.
This movie is a truly majestic piece of pop-culture that continues to be influential to this day.
