When lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is sentenced to community service for drunk driving, he is forced to coach the District 5 hockey team. Whilst reluctant at first, Gordon and the team bond, he renames them the Ducks and they eventually go up against the team Gordon played for as a kid.

The movie was followed by two direct sequels with the original cast as well as an unrelated animated television series. In some countries, the home release of the film was titled Champions or Mighty Ducks are the Champions.

This was the last film starring John Candy to be released whilst he was still alive. The story is a loose adaptation of the Jamaican national bobsled team that debuted in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, which was also notable for being the year Eddie the Eagle competed in the games.

In the film version, Jamaican sprinter Derice Bannock and his friend Sanka turn to two time bobsled gold medalist Irv Blitzer (Candy) to help them compete in the games after Derice failed to qualify in the sprint trials. They recruit another sprinter that Derice accidentally got disqualified from the qualifiers as well as Junior, another Jamaican.

Continuing the trend of sports movies based on a true story, this film is based on footballer Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg), who played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976 to 1978. Married and working as a part-time substitute teacher and part time bartender, Vince loses his teaching job and wife at the same time.

After seeing on the news that the Philadelphia Eagles are holding open tryouts, Papale desperate for money decides to attend the tryouts and impresses the head coach, resulting in him being invited to training camp to compete for a roster spot.

This sports drama is based on the 1966 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship which had the first all-black starting lineup for a team in the NCAA. Josh Lucas stars as college basketball coach Don Haskins who ignores race to put a team together that will give the Texas Western Miners the best chance of winning.

The film did garner some controversy when it was released when viewers found certain portrayals of characters to be racist and inaccurate but Disney maintained it was not a documentary. The ensemble cast also includes John Voight, Derek Luke, Emily Deschanel and Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks.

The script itself is adapted from the novel The Greatest Game Ever Played: Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, and the Birth of Modern Golf, which were both written by Mark Frost.

The real Herb Brooks died whilst the film was in production and unable to see the finished product. The film was well received upon its release and has been voted the best sports movie of all time in many polls since then.

The film is notable for featuring the early acting appearances of Ryan Gosling, Kate Bosworth and a very young Hayden Panettiere. It also benefits from a strong soundtrack that give the movie a feel good atmosphere, even through its darker and more dramatic content.

1 The Sandlot (1993) 7.8

Known in some countries as The Sandlot Kids, the movie takes place in 1962 and follows 5th grader Scott Smalls moving to a small town where he befriends a group of kids that play baseball and bond over the summer.

Most people would remember this film for being the movie with the dog owned by James Earl Jones, known as ‘the Beast’ that lives over the fence from the baseball field which has claimed many a baseball. When the boys hit a valuable baseball over the fence, they do everything they can to try and retrieve it.
