Disney+ has a wide variety of movie genres, but one of the most inspiring is sports related. Here are the top sports movies, according to IMDb.

The Disney Plus library is constantly being updated with new content, and as it currently stands there is an abundance of great sporting movies. The library can be difficult to navigate, even if users type in sport or sports movies, not all the results will show up.

Sporting movies are one of Disney’s strengths as they include a lot of humor and a lot of heart. If audiences are looking for something a little different to watch through Disney Plus aside from Star Wars and Marvel, then these film are the way to go. These are the best sports movies currently on Disney Plus, based on the user ratings on IMDb.

10 The Mighty Ducks (1992) 6.5

When lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is sentenced to community service for drunk driving, he is forced to coach the District 5 hockey team. Whilst reluctant at first, Gordon and the team bond, he renames them the Ducks and they eventually go up against the team Gordon played for as a kid.

The movie was followed by two direct sequels with the original cast as well as an unrelated animated television series. In some countries, the home release of the film was titled Champions or Mighty Ducks are the Champions.

9 The Rookie (2002) 6.9

The film follows the true story of Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) who had a brief career in Major League Baseball, playing for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The movie itself focuses on the events that led up to Morris playing in the majors.

Morris originally gets drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers but after he tears his shoulder, is unable to fulfill his dreams of playing professional baseball. Moving ahead in time, Jim works as a high school science teacher and baseball coach for the Big Lake Owls. The team catcher see’s potential in Jim as a player and he ends up leading them to win the playoffs.

8 Cool Running’s (1993) 7.0

This was the last film starring John Candy to be released whilst he was still alive. The story is a loose adaptation of the Jamaican national bobsled team that debuted in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, which was also notable for being the year Eddie the Eagle competed in the games.

In the film version, Jamaican sprinter Derice Bannock and his friend Sanka turn to two time bobsled gold medalist Irv Blitzer (Candy) to help them compete in the games after Derice failed to qualify in the sprint trials. They recruit another sprinter that Derice accidentally got disqualified from the qualifiers as well as Junior, another Jamaican.

7 Million Dollar Arm (2014) 7.0

Out of all the films on this list, Million Dollar Arm is the most recent and again is based on a true story. The film stars Jon Hamm as sports agent J.B Bernstein who travels to India to find potential baseball players that he can represent.

Bernstein comes up with the idea to hold a talent contest called “Million Dollar Arm” where contestants score points by how well they pitch a baseball. The two contestants that score the most points win prize money, flights to the U.S and professional baseball coaching.

6 Invincible (2006) 7.1

Continuing the trend of sports movies based on a true story, this film is based on footballer Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg), who played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976 to 1978. Married and working as a part-time substitute teacher and part time bartender, Vince loses his teaching job and wife at the same time.

After seeing on the news that the Philadelphia Eagles are holding open tryouts, Papale desperate for money decides to attend the tryouts and impresses the head coach, resulting in him being invited to training camp to compete for a roster spot.

5 Glory Road (2006) 7.2

This sports drama is based on the 1966 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship which had the first all-black starting lineup for a team in the NCAA. Josh Lucas stars as college basketball coach Don Haskins who ignores race to put a team together that will give the Texas Western Miners the best chance of winning.

The film did garner some controversy when it was released when viewers found certain portrayals of characters to be racist and inaccurate but Disney maintained it was not a documentary. The ensemble cast also includes John Voight, Derek Luke, Emily Deschanel and Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks.

4 The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005) 7.4

Disney alum Shia LaBeouf stars in this biopic directed by Bill Paxton which looks at the early career of golfer Francis Ouimet. The script itself is adapted from the novel The Greatest Game Ever Played: Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, and the Birth of Modern Golf, which were both written by Mark Frost.

Set in 1913 when golf was a sport for the wealthy, Francis Ouimet, who comes from a working-class family, starts off as a caddy before becoming a golfer in his own right and winning the Massachusetts Schoolboy Championship. As his skills continue to increase, he eventually finds himself invited to compete in the U.S Open.

3 Miracle (2004) 7.5

Urban legends suggest that Walt Disne’s dying words were “Kurt Russell,” so it’s fitting that at least one film starring the actor made this list. Miracle tells the true story of Herb Brooks (Russell), a hockey coach that leads the United States Men’s National Hockey team in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The real Herb Brooks died whilst the film was in production and unable to see the finished product. The film was well received upon its release and has been voted the best sports movie of all time in many polls since then.

2 Remember the Titans (2000) 7.8

Listed as one of the best football films of all time, Remember the Titans is a highly regarded film in general, based on the true story of football coach Herman Boone. Boone, played by Denzel Washington, is an African-American coach that integrates the T.C Williams High School despite community uproar and teaches the boys as well as the community, the spirit of unity.

The film is notable for featuring the early acting appearances of Ryan Gosling, Kate Bosworth and a very young Hayden Panettiere. It also benefits from a strong soundtrack that give the movie a feel good atmosphere, even through its darker and more dramatic content.

1 The Sandlot (1993) 7.8

Known in some countries as The Sandlot Kids, the movie takes place in 1962 and follows 5th grader Scott Smalls moving to a small town where he befriends a group of kids that play baseball and bond over the summer.

Most people would remember this film for being the movie with the dog owned by James Earl Jones, known as ‘the Beast’ that lives over the fence from the baseball field which has claimed many a baseball. When the boys hit a valuable baseball over the fence, they do everything they can to try and retrieve it.
