Solo A Star Wars Story to Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival

Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story will reportedly debut at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its global launch at the end of May. After premiering the middle chapter of their latest Star Wars trilogy in December, Lucasfilm is next gearing up for the second of their spinoff films from the main saga. The first of these anthology films, Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, became a critical and financial success after hitting theaters in December 2016. However, Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a markedly more turbulent production.

Lucasfilm originally set Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct the Han Solo prequel, but they left the project weeks before it was set to wrap principal photography. Howard was brought in to direct the remainder of the film and seemingly significant amount of reshoots, using the same Solo: A Star Wars Story script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. Though fans were initially concerned by how late Lucasfilm unveiled the first trailer for Solo, the marketing push officially launched with the teaser during the Super Bowl. With Solo set to hit theaters in just under two months, promotion should increase, and now we know when the movie will make its official debut.

Deadline is reporting Lucasfilm will debut Solo: A Star Wars Story during the Cannes Film Festival next month, with a special screening out of competition on May 15, 10 days before its global launch on May 25. Though Cannes is known for its prestige film lineup, plenty of blockbusters have screened during the festival, including X-Men: The Last Stand and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out.

Further, Solo won’t be the first Star Was movie to screen at the festival. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones screened out of competition in 2002, while Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith premiered at Cannes in 2005. While none of the new Star Wars movies since J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens have been featured at the festival, it may have more to do with their December release dates. With Solo hitting theaters in May, having it debut at a film festival known around the world for its prestige can’t hurt the movie’s global roll out.

Additionally, with Solo’s first screening arriving during Cannes, fans can start to look for early reviews of the movie to drop on or shortly after May 15. So far, Lucasfilm has delivered three critical hits since being acquired by Disney. Though Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi was divisive among fans, the reviews were largely positive from critics. Still, given all that went on behind the scenes of Solo with its director change, it remains to be seen if Howard and Lucasfilm put together another critical hit for the reinvigorated Star Wars franchise.

That said, considering their track record since The Force Awakens, in addition to the talented cast of Solo including Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, it’s certainly possible the studio has another massive hit on their hands. Thankfully, with Solo: A Star Wars Story set to premiere at Cannes, we know when we’ll learn more about what to expect from the upcoming anthology movie set in a galaxy far, far away.
