Disney What Would Princess Rapunzels Pokémon Team Be
Disney: What Would Princess Rapunzel’s Pokémon Team Be?
If Disney and Pokémon crossed over, what would Tangled’s Ranpunzel team be like? (Bonus: Flynn and Mother Gothel’s teams, too!)

If you think about it, all the Disney Princesses have a lot in common with the Pokémon trainers in the ever-popular Nintendo games, and associated anime. They all leave their homes to go on a life-changing journey, and end up defeating some bad guys along the way – with the help of their trusty animal partners. Rapunzel is one of the best examples of this: If she were in a Pokémon game, Mother Gothel would be the head of the evil team (probably “Team Flower” or something), and Flynn would be her rival-slash-friend.
But, of course, there’s still one key element missing, and that raises the question: what would Rapunzel’s Pokémon team look like? It might seem impossible to guess at first, but there are enough details throughout the movie that, if one were to look closely enough, will help to put the six-piece puzzle together. Not only that, but you can probably pretty accurately guess which Pokémon she’d run into on her journey, too!
10 Team Member: Kecleon
It’s obvious that Kecleon would be Rapunzel’s first Pokémon, and her best friend: If somebody were to take Pascal and put him in the Pokémon universe, he would definitely turn into a Kecleon. Rapunzel would have met him while she was still locked in the tower, and he would constantly be encouraging her to leave and go see the world, just like in Tangled (and just like a good Pokémon should do). He’d have no problem hiding from Mother Gothel because of his ability to camouflage, and his ability to change types on a whim would be super helpful in battle out in the real world.
9 Team Member: Flabébé
Flabébé is a flower fairy Pokémon that draws its powers (including healing abilities) from the little yellow flower it holds – one that looks remarkably similar to the one we see at the beginning of Tangled, which is where Rapunzel’s special powers come from. Flabébé would be drawn to Rapunzel because her hair would contain the same healing properties as the flower that the tiny species clings to, and Rapunzel, being who she is, would probably befriend one of them at some point in her young life. When she leaves the tower, her little friend would come back to join her team.
8 Team Member: Alolan Exeggutor
Alolan Exeggutor is another friend Rapunzel would make during her 18-year stay in her tower. Why? Because the palm tree Pokémon is around 35 feet tall, which means that its head would be high enough to see into Rapunzel’s tower and hang out with her when Mother Gothel wasn’t around. Maybe she would even escape the tower with Alolan Exeggutor’s help, rather than just jumping out on her own. Either way, after she left, he’d probably follow her around until she agreed to put him in a Pokéball so that they wouldn’t get caught.
7 Team Member: Machoke
In Tangled, when Rapunzel and Flynn go to the Snuggly Duckling, Rapunzel wins over a group of rough-and-tumble criminals, who later return to help her and bust Flynn out of prison.
In the Pokémon version of this story, Rapunzel would still win over the criminals, but she would also win over one of the soft-hearted Machoke who hung around there – maybe one of the men would give him to her so that she would have protection on her journey.
6 Team Member: Alolan Dugtrio
Rapunzel and Alolan Dugtrio would form a strong bond right away – they would see their similar hair and know they were destined to be friends. Since Alolan Dugtrio live in the ground, she probably wouldn’t meet this particular friend until after she left her tower – they’d most likely meet when she and Flynn are trying to escape the abandoned mines. Dugtrio could use its digging powers to help the team escape the flooding tunnels!
5 Team Member: Galarian Rapidash
Of course, Rapunzel’s team wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of one more member: Her trusty steed, Maximus. There are a few different horse Pokémon that Maximus could have been, but the Fairy-Psychic type Galarian Rapidash is exactly the right combination of regal and sweet to fit the bill. (After all, as Rapunzel says herself, he’s really “just a big softie.”) He’d originally be an opponent for the team, using his psychic powers to hunt down Flynn Rider, but he’d be converted to their side after meeting Rapunzel. (He’d probably eventually join Flynn’s team instead, but, being the type to stubbornly refuse to get into a Pokéball, you’d never be able to say for sure whose he really is.)
4 Legendary Pokémon: Solageo
Every good Pokémon adventure needs a legendary, and in Tangled that legendary would definitely be Solageo. Just like the flower in Tangled that Rapunzel originally gets her powers from, the legendary Solageo harnesses the powers of the sun within its body.
Mother Gothel and whatever evil team was backing her would probably be trying to hunt Solageo to capture and use its powers, but Rapunzel would save him at the last minute. He, in return, would use his powers to help Rapunzel bring Flynn back to life, for a good old-fashioned happy ending.
3 Problem Pokémon: Tangela
Another common element in most Pokémon movies and episodes is the “pest” Pokémon, who constantly bothers the heroes and often causes trouble for them. In the original anime, this Pokémon was Jigglypuff, who would show up at inconvenient times and sing the team to sleep, then draw on their faces. In Tangled, it would most fittingly be Tangela. This Pokémon would probably show up at inappropriate times just to tangle Rapunzel’s hair. And, just like in the anime, this Pokémon would ultimately help the team out in the long run: Maybe a group of wild Tangela would be the ones to braid Rapunzel’s hair for her when she reaches the village.
2 Flynn’s Pokémon
Of course, Rapunzel’s Pokémon wouldn’t be the only ones the audience would see in this Disney-Nintendo crossover adventure: Flynn Rider would have his own well-established team way before he ever met Rapunzel. He’d most likely have Pokémon that would help him with his misadventures in thievery (while still looking cool): Pokémon like Weavile, Theivul, Ambipom, and Greninja. But he might also bond with a stray Phantump or Cubone along the way, given his soft spot for orphaned children. (Both of those Pokémon have backstories involving losing parents or being left alone).
1 Mother Gothel’s Pokémon
Mother Gothel is obsessed with youth and beauty, so her Pokémon team would probably reflect that. She’d have Pokémon like Milotic, Mismagius, Liepard, Beautifly, and Florges. She’d also have a Glameow that she would refuse to let evolve into a Purugly, because then she wouldn’t be beautiful anymore. Don’t worry, there would still be a happy ending for them: when Gothel turns to dust at the end from trying to harness Solageo’s power, her Pokémon would be free again, and Glameow would finally get to evolve in peace. That’s another great thing that Disney and Pokémon have in common: In the end, the good guys always win.
