A gag from the third xXx movie suggests that the series takes place within the MCU. With xXx and The Fast And The Furious, there have been two instances in his career where Vin Diesel walked away from potential franchises after being unhappy with the direction they were heading. Diesel didn’t return for 2 Fast 2 Furious, as he felt the screenplay didn’t work and a sequel would harm the original’s chances of being considered a “classic.” Of course, he later returned for a cameo in The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, and helped steer later sequels towards box-office gold.

Diesel passed on 2 Fast 2 Furious to make xXx instead. This cast him as Xander Cage, an extreme sports lover recruited by the NSA to take down a terrorist group. xXx was billed as the start of a hip, new James Bond-style franchise and was a comfortable hit back in 2002. Still, Diesel got cold feet over the studio’s preferred script for xXx 2 and walked away yet again. In the intervening years, his success with the Fast & Furious sequels saw a revival of xXx, with Diesel reprising the title role in 2017’s The Return Of Xander Cage.

Samuel L. Jackson’s Gibbons also came back for xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage as Agent Gibbons. In the gap between the second and third movies, Jackson scored another famous role with the MCU’s Nick Fury. There are a few similarities between Gibbons and Fury, with both being shadowy government figures who recruit reluctant protagonists to their world-saving causes. In fact, the opening of the third xXx sees Gibbons attempting to recruit football star Neymar for the program, with a graphic card joking that the latter thought he was being recruited for The Avengers.

xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage makes a few pointed gags to the MCU, including Gibbons wearing glasses with one blacked-out eye; this is a nod to Fury’s eyepatch. What’s odd about the opening – aside from Gibbon’s wanting to recruit a famous athlete for his top-secret program – is that the Neymar joke implies the Avengers actually exist in the world of the xXx film series. While the entire gag was likely just added in post-production, these intro cards are also presenting facts about the characters and the world.

On that basis, unless Neymar somehow believes in superheroes, that means a version of The Avengers must exist in xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage’s world. Of course, such a crossover is extremely unlikely – which is to say nothing of the lawsuit delaying xXx 4 – and it would awkward having scenes with Jackson’s Fury and Gibbons together. That said, there’s nothing to rule out the xXx and MCU franchises existing side by side; not even Groot being voiced by Diesel. Ultimately, The Avengers reference was a throwaway gag not meant to be taken seriously – even though it’s possible to read it that way.
