This article contains spoilers for Savage Avengers #22.

Marvel Comics’ Doctor Strange is saving the life of what may be his next major enemy in the MCU. The Multiverse may have only just been unleashed in the MCU, but it’s always been a part of the comic books – and the special province of Doctor Strange. As Sorcerer Supreme, he is the protector of this entire plane of existence, dedicated to defending it against extradimensional intruders who would otherwise conquer and consume it.

One of the most dangerous of these entities is Shuma-Gorath, rumored to be the main villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. One of the ancient Elder Gods, Shuma-Gorath ruled Earth long before humanity ever evolved, but was banished to another dimension. “Before all was, I was,” Shuma-Gorath told the Avengers during one battle. “Before time was, I waited. I fed on the screaming souls of the universes. I drank the spoiled milk of dead stars. I am the emptiness outside all understanding. I am Shuma-Gorath.” Doctor Strange first proved himself worthy to be Sorcerer Supreme when he successfully defeated this creature, repelling one of its many attempts to conquer Earth.

What makes it all the more shocking is that Doctor Strange is now trying to save the life of Shuma-Gorath, as Conan the Barbarian learns when he forces his way into the Sanctum Sanctorum in Gerry Duggan and Patch Zircher’s Savage Avengers #22. Conan has fought Shuma-Gorath and its cultists, and he never expected to learn his present-day ally was treating Shuma-Gorath’s injuries. “I’m sorry, I’m with a patient right now,” Doctor Strange tells him. “I believe you are acquainted with Shuma-Gorath?”

Of course, in reality, Doctor Strange has good reason to be helping Shuma-Gorath; as powerful and dangerous as this Elder God may be, it’s currently the lesser of two evils. Doctor Strange and various mystical allies are currently dealing with the threat of Kulan Gath, the darkest Sorcerer Supreme, a villain who originates from Conan’s time in the Hyborean Age. Kulan Gath is the master of a twisted form of blood magic, allowing him to attain the knowledge of a sorcerer when he consumes their flesh and internal organs. This evil practice has allowed Kulan Gath to survive for millions of years, and he has already proved to be more than a match for both Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom. But he has now set his sights on godhood, consuming the flesh of Shuma-Gorath’s cultists and by doing so devouring the magic of Shuma-Gorath himself. Patch Zircher’s stunning image of Shuma-Gorath shows blood and ichor flowing from its wounds, with radiant beams of power projecting from those injuries – and it’s likely every shaft of light is more power that Kulan Gath can draw upon.

Gerry Duggan’s Savage Avengers is currently one of Marvel’s strongest comics, pitting a handful of Marvel’s darkest heroes against a threat from the dawn of time. Doctor Strange has a plan, but it is clearly forcing him into uncomfortable alliances. What’s more, previous issues hinted Doctor Strange is considering using blood magic and cannibalism against Kulan Gath as well – which means the defeat of this ancient Sorcerer Supreme may force Doctor Strange to embrace magic with the potential to corrupt him forever.
